Last game you finished, tell us about it

So you played the Japanese version obviously. Where did you find a full copy? I would like to get one.

Ive seen one ps1 version in ebay (seller was japanese) but no windows ones. I dont think the game exists outside japan. You should try japanese ebay (whatever that is) - if you want a full copy. I only have the "abandonware" version (PM me for link if you want that).

eBay Japan stopped its operation on March 31, 2002, Japan time, says the link Ayara mentioned.

I had an eBay Japan account for the short time they existed. eBay came into Japan too late. Yahoo entered the Japanese market earlier and already had a strong foothold on the Japanese online auction scene before eBay came. So they had to pack up and leave after a couple of years piggybacking on bidders (http://bidders.co.jp/)' service.

So if you want to do online auction here in Japan, you just have to learn the language and get a Yahoo! Auctions (http://auction.yahoo.co.jp/) account. I use Yahoo Auctions Japan and eBay (USA) a lot. IMHO, Japanese online auctioneers are a lot easier to deal and communicate with, i.e., if you speak the language and know the culture.

Ohwell, at least I finished it now. I wonder if I will bother about Dark Forces later...

I liked Dark Forces a lot better than DF2, particularly the atmosphere - which to me is the most important aspect of games. However, I did play it in its time, when mouse-look hadn't even been established yet in first-person games. Today I guess you'd absolutely need to run the game in DosBox with Super2xSai interpolation turned on or so. Low res 3D games without proper hardware acceleration look pretty bad.

The Dig (9 / 10)
Loved it. Great music, interesting if familiar story, beautiful graphics, wonderful sense of exploration. A few times I had to resort to a walkthrough, mostly only when I basically knew what to do but was too lazy to actually go through with it. Some puzzles were just too micro-managy.

Yeah, it was a great game. The fact that there was no one alive except your "party" somehow greatly added to its atmosphere and mystery.

I remember the time when I've finally assembled that turtle thingy after two hours of frustration and after that the monster just ate it, nothing happened and I had to do it all over again. That was rude :). Other than that I dig Dig.

Decent Star wars feel once I managed to overlook the annoying stereotypical female thief NPC. My only substantial complaints are: stupid minigames that only act as fillers but luckily are optional, the last few maps endless hordes of respawning moderately strong enemies coupled with an NPC AI that doesnt have the brain to just run past the bunch, and the final battle, which was extremely tedious for my light side fellow without any damaging force powers. Having to deal with an eight times regenerating idiot that dishes out damage almost twice as fast as my char and never misses got rather old. Disappointed with the rather boring last hour of the game I ended up editing my char to con 50 and simply ground the baddy down... I got fed up with getting killed by the five times regenerated jerk just because I forgot to put a medpack in the action queue.

In spite of the endgame it's probably my second most enjoyable Aurora engine experience after NWNs SoU expansion:)

I actually have it loaded with DosBox. The game might be a bit too old though. My greatest annoyance is the controls. It took alot of tweaking until I could get it to work somewhere near the kind of configuration I use in modern FPS's. I am at level four already though.

Yet you rate the FF games? Anyway, let me help you - 5/5. One of the best shooters of all time.

I ran through JK a few years ago. This time, I played the expansion "Mysteries of the Sith".

I've just finished playing one of the NWN2 mods called "Dark waters 1" by Adam Miller. I will give this mod 7.5/10

It is a fantastic mod. Original, mind-blowing story combined with good NPC interactions. Romance is also provided but since this is the 1st part out of 5, not much going on so far.

But unfortunately, this is more adventure game rather than rpg, so there's heaps of puzzles but hardly any battles. Adventure game just isn't my cup of tea. Also, some NPCs voicing is HORRIBLE. Another thing is, it's a massive size mod.

Overall, I actually quite enjoyed it and thinking of playing the 2nd part soon.

I decided that I should retroactively review all the mobilegames I finished. I prefer adventure/rpg/puzzlegames over actiongames on mobilephones even if I have found some actiongames that can be played without breaking your thumb.

DeValley's "Nowhere"
Nowhere by DeValley is really the best game I have played on a mobile phone so far. Sure, it's a Silent Hill ripoff, but that's not bad is it? You swap back and forth between the real world and a nightmare world (filled with mist!), encountering horrible monsters. A great horror story and a very entertaining game with great graphics to be a mobile game. Combat can be annoying due to the fact that it's difficult to aim diagonally.

GLU's "Stranded"
Stranded by GLU is also one of the finest games made for the mobile platform. I believe it's influenced by LOST, but that's not a bad thing. Stranded is a mix of adventure and survival game. You spend alot of time gathering stuff on the island and eventually you progress the story which is excellent for a mobile game. This is actually one of those games I want a sequel to just to see more of the story! Like all GLU's games you can try the game directly on the website.

Impressionware's "Generals: Alien Colony"
Impressionware's Generals Alien Colony is one of the better squadbased strategygames out there on the mobile phone. It's roundbased meaning that it plays like UFO: Enemy Unknown and similar games. Quite short though.

Elkware's "X-Files: The Deserter"
Elkware's X-Files, the Deserter, is the only real adventuregame I finished on a mobile phone and it's not a particulary good one. I found the puzzles to be quite annoying.

Nostromo's "Sim Babe"
If you have played the type you know exactly what this is about. You have a limited number of days to get a girlfriend. To do this you need to pump up your stats (Charisma, IQ or Strength) to earn money enough to go on expensive dates and buy expensive presents. It's not really a porn game but the main character is really a jerk who only want to get laid. An annoying feature was that sometimes you get a rival and must get rid of him, which takes a day. Dates are really expensive and booked early on. If you are unlucky enough to get a rival the same day as the date you waste the money and you have probably also lost the game.

GLU's "Shadowwalker"
Most mobile games are inspired by old classics on other platforms and Shadowalker is probably a ripoff of Castlevania (a game I personally never played though). The story is very well presented and inspired to be used in a mobile game. The main character, with a messed up background, battles undead opponents on ships, in castles and in villages. She can collect coins and use them in stores to update her weapons and armor.
Shadowalker is a really ambitious game that would have been flawless if it wasnt for the very annoying and almost impossible jumps you sometimes have to make to beat it. Like all GLU's games you can try the game directly on the website.

GameLoft's Lifestyle Sims
Gameloft's "Lifestyle sims" games have grown since the first one (New York Nights 1) was released. Each new game improved the old one. They are all highly addicting and funny. I can recommend them all. Love Triangle Challenge is more of a dating game though and not a particulary fun experience, except for maybe a few smiles. If you only want the best ones, it would probably be Popstar: Road to Celebrity and New York Nights 2. NYN2 have the best overall graphics and mechanics while Popstar have fun minigames similar to Guitar Hero.

New York Nights 2: Friends for Life
American Popstar: Road to Celebrity
Las Vegas Nights
Crazy Campus
Miami Nights: Single In The City
New York Nights: Success in the City
Love Triangle Challenge

Rovio Mobile's action/adventuregames
Rovio is one of the better mobile developers out there.

Cyberblood
Star Marine
They have released several games with the same formula. Star Marine & Cyberblood are based on a similar concept. They are actiongames with some story in them as well. CyberBlood is a post-apocalyptic game with a similar theme to Fallout. Star Marine is a spacegame similar to Space Hulk. They are not Rovio's best IMO. Paid to Kill (which I have not been able to finish yet) uses the same mechanics as well, but is better than the other two due to a good story and stealth mechanics.

Darkest Fear 1
Darkest Fear 2: Grim Oak
Darkest Fear 3: Nightmare
The Darkest Fear series are some of the best horror-adventures made on the mobile phone (topped only by Nowhere). Quite decent story in these with a very dark theme. It's one of the few games on mobile in which the music really helps to suck you in. The second game is more of an adventuregame while the first and third are puzzlegames.

Dragon & Jade
Dragon & Jade is a detective story in chinatown during the 30'ies. The game itself is quite simple though and boils down to an actiongame. Not one of Rovio's better games IMO but a nice theme.

Wolfmoon
Wolfmoon is an adventure/survival horror game using RPG mechanics. The main character have been bitten by a werewolf and need to explore the area for a cure. This is one of Rovio's better games. It's played like the old 3d dungeonhacks such as Eye of the Beholder or Dungeon Master. Each game is randomized and you have to go around finding medpacks, silverbullets etc while getting chased by hunters.

Digital Chocolate's Zelda-lookalikes
Fantasy Warrior 1
Fantasy Warrior 2 - Good
Decent zelda-style minirpg's. Quite well made, decent story and great graphics. Well recommended for anyone who thinks Zelda would make a good game on mobile phones or whoever seeks action-rpg's in general.

Glu's Ancient Empire strategygames
Ancient Empires 1
Ancient Empires 2
If you sort reviews by score on sites that review mobile games, the Ancient Empires series are always in the top ten. It's easy to say why, they are highly addicting and well designed strategygames with a decent storyline on top of that. They blend WarCraft with Heroes of Might & Magic. Naturally the second game improves the game a lot by making it more balanced, but even the first one is great. A must play for anyone serious about mobile gaming. You can play the game on the website, part 1 here and part 2 here.

Gameloft's Splinter Cell
The splinter cell series are some of the best platformers available on mobile phones. Graphically they are absolutely stunning and the game mechanics are top notch. They do not follow the same story as the computergames with the same names so they contain no spoilers. Like the computergames you get bonuspoints for staying hidden and penalties for using your pistol (and getting seen). On almost every level there are events which is out of the norm, meaning that things happens that are sometimes funny, sometimes cool but have nothing to do with the gameplay. Just a fun feature that adds to the feel of the game.

Splinter Cell - Double Agent
Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory
Splinter Cell - Pandora Tomorrow
Splinter Cell - Extended Ops
Splinter Cell

Wonder Boy 2 - Wonderboy in Monsterland
To me, this game is mostly a prequel to the third game, one that I wanted to complete for a looooong time. I believe I beat it on C64 way back but the SEGA version is on my opinion the best edition of the game. In the first Wonder Boy, the guy himself looks like a caveman who throws stoneaxes and can get a skateboard (!?). The second game have more in common with a Platform-RPG set in a classic fantasy environment. Ofcourse, this is because Monsterland was a different game that was only labeled Wonder Boy 2 for popularity. Wonder Boy 3 actually go by the name Monsterland II in Japan. Anyway, you go around and collect gold for better equipment, solve quests (well, if they can be considered quests) and beat bosses. The game is fairly short but it takes a bit longer if one wish to get enough money to get the best equipment. The game is probably too aged for most gamers today, but im no average gamer.

JemyM,

I'm impressed with the amount of games you seem to not only play, but complete!

I'm a student again, gymnasium level. During the recent year (summer-summer) I have studied way beyond what's normal to read up my grades in 2 years instead of 3. Because of that, I have'nt actually been able to play games like I used to, except a few during christmas. Since all the stress have had a negative impact on me both physically and mentally, many people including my wife, family, friends and teachers told me to slow down. To do that I spend my summer with distance learning courses that I know that I wont fail even if I barely read them. They still counts as points (and grades) in the swedish school system. Earlier this summer I took a beginners course in English, which I passed with an A. Right now I'm "reading" computer-knowledge. It's on the level "how to find the start-menu" and "how to close a window". This means that when I should spend 8 hours of day practicing, I instead play games and watch movies since I already know everything the course need to teach, then I can just write the final exam and get my grade. I need the rest. This autumn will be the final push, then I just need to pass 2 courses during spring and I can go to whatever university I want to, taking whatever course I want to.

But yeah, I finished several mobilephone games... but they take a few hours maximum to finish.

Updated my mobilegame post with some more info.

I have finished two ... Orcs & Elves and recently Puzzle Quest: Warlords.

I have Orcs & Elves 1 & 2 but not Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. If you liked Orcs & Elves you should check out Doom RPG. It's NOT what one might think. Yes, the name of the game is DOOM, yes it even looks like DOOM, but it's really a role-playing game. I haven't finished it yet but it's one of the better games on mobile phones.

It seems that game got great score's in reviews though. I'm generally no fan of puzzlegames but maybe the RPG+Puzzle formula mixes well...

I love Puzzle Quest, and own *seven* copies across platforms ... it is like a better Bejeweled with opponents and a story ...

Fallout.

Finally polished of The Master with my Alien Blaster. Sniped my through a lot of the places and missed some 'talking heads' and npcs. Easy to see why it's a classic even with the old interface, love the atmosphere and dark comic character. Like the cool map system with special encounters, reminds me of old pnp tables encounters - that I like. I got the Tardis and the Alien Ship right near the end (handy). Broad choices in quests, consequences, character skills, weapons = very re-playable.

5/5 - and didn't get to listen to David Warner's character so I have to play it again.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
This game felt like going back to my roots. It felt great to play a "classic" hardcore RPG, with mechanics that force you to use your brain, and also offer a such well-written and deeply philosophical storyline. The Neverwinter Nights II engine is really great. The faces are usually quite bad though. Still, with Mask of the Betrayer it's the story that counts and this might be the deepest RPG's I have played since Planescape Torment... They really know how to use the Faerûn setting.

With that I have finished every Obsidian, Black Isle, Bioware and Troika game ever released and I have also finished the third of the large RPG's I promised myself to finish this summer (the other two were Arcanum and Mass Effect). I had planned to play The Wither, but I will wait for the Special Edition version.

I'm amazed at the rate you finish games.... I'm still struggling to finish MotB.

I firmly believe now that it won't NEVER be released here in Germany on CD-ROM because of some crappy exclusive treaty that Gamesload (a daughter company of the German Telekom) and the publisher, ValuSoft, once made.

The developers were never informed, as far as I know.

Crysis
Now I remember my issues with Half-Life 2. You see, I had just played Flashpoint and Far Cry, and I really thought that free-roaming FPS will change FPS's forever. Then Half-Life 2 came and it was a scripted FPS that now felt like a rail-shooter compared to those games. Well, at least the story in Half Life 2 was ok, and with Episode I and II I started to enjoy HL2 again. Then I play a game like Crysis, which remind me what those games were, and they were everything what a FPS should be. A free-roaming landscape where the only task is to get to the checkpoints, no telling you how. It offers the player options. Options how to solve each situation. It's possible to rush through, but it's also possible to just mess around for awhile. Add to that vehicle travel, the best looking 3d Engine up to date and you have a FPS which can as well be the official icon of first-person shooters. Ofcourse, the game was not without issues. It took me a long time to play it (I had it since it was released actually) due to problems with SLI. I finally forced the game to Direct X 9 which solved the problems. The second problem is the story, which was rather uninteresting really. Then there was these levels in the middle, with zero-gravity, that was really really annoying. It took me ages to get through one level simply because it was so disorienting.

Halo 2
Now Halo 2 was not a bad game. The story is actually quite good and the engine is solid. Gameplay is just great. However, the game looks like it was made around y2k. As a gamer, I am not stupid, and in some ways Halo 2 is an insult. Publishing the game at premium price 2007 is on the edge of scam. I had loads of problems making this game run, and eventually I used a hack to make it run in XP. Setting up the controls was a nuisance. If you had a key assigned to something you could not use the same key for something else while you were driving a vehicle. In several places I could not switch weapons like I wanted to and the dual-weapon system had a load of problems. For instance, when you have backspace as secondary fire, you cannot turn left. I had to use my mousedrivers to change the mousebutton I often use as backspace in windows. Also, you throw away your second weapon when you take a vehicle and when you throw a grenade. Annoying. Still, despite my feelings against the game, I found myself wanting to play just another level to see what would happen next. The repetitiveness of Halo was not repeated in Halo 2. The levels were diversive enough to not feel like I was doing the same things over and over again. I do not have an XBox 360 and it's not worth buying one for Halo 3, but if I got the chance to play H3 I will do so.
