The ever-popular "Currently Listening" thread

Ah Yes, Durutti Column, they made the worlds first ever DAT (digital audi tape) recording with "The Guitar and other Machines" album, which contained my fave drum style track "When the World" - Vinni Reilly is a great guitar style influence.

Jim Stafford - "Swamp Witch"

An old track from way back. The light grunge wah effect backing shows just how it should be done, detectable but not dominant over lyrics, a ideal blend to the drum rhythm perfect for iambic poetry styles. The sirenic voice of the swamp witch adds atmosphere to this eerie tale.

Track.

Hard to believe it's been 20 years... Mrs dte hatedhatedhated that song, so I used to sing it to her back in the day.

Found a complete version of an LSD classic. At the band website, of all places . Most of you will probably find the beginning to be a snoozer. For the brave souls with patience, the payoff hits about 2:45. The slow, delicate intro is the perfect contrast to the powerful finish. Yes folks, it's the shoegaze version of the 80s power ballad...

It is easy to understand those who hated it - it was massively overplayed, even for someone like me who doesn't ever listen to radio.

Radio saturation wasn't the problem. If it didn't involve long hair and leather pants, Mrs dte wasn't interested back then. Not sure how I squeezed into that worldview...

Adding some textural music today.

Ulrich Schnauss, one of my favourite "chillout" artists.
His "In Strangely Isolated Place" album works really great after those full-night beerstorms :). Also, it´s a bliss listening to it while highway driving.

In All the Wrong Places - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pUAUHyxRpU

Monday Paracetamol - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjacfNpitlQ
Soundscapes in this one are VAST and pictures in the video nicely complements that.

Chillin´.

Schnauss is probably the biggest name going in shoegaze/dreampop right now, as much for his remixing work as his original tunes. There's hope for you yet, DeepO. Although that's not my favorite flavor of the genre, I can dig you up a few similar artists if you're interested.

edit- BTW, I forgot to mention that the main guy from Durutti Column (Andy?)posts on the shoegaze board from time to time. I've never got my head around these "rock stars" being real people.

By the way, Peter Heppner (former voice of Wolfsheim) released a solo album. I heard it was called 'Solo' and contained songs with English and German lyrics, but I haven't seen or heard it yet. Just thought dte might be interested.

EDIT
Ordo sounded pretty good on the big stage... a lot better than in the video.

Hm, didn´t realize he´s that big :). However, his last album blows imo.
If you can dig up similar artists, something with a bit of jazzy flavour would be nice.

There seem to be a lot of real people on the Internet recently. Cool to know there are some rock stars in the mix .

As for your hope comment, I guess not :).
Shoegaze/dreampop is nice but when I really want to be blown away I prefer artists who push the limits further, such as, for example, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum which I´m listening to right now.
Their videos are nicely idiosyncratic and basically, well, awesome, so I´m not shy to post them here:

A Hymn To The Morning Star

Helpless Corpses Enactment

Btw, my totally favourite "chillout" track is Arvo Part´s Tabula Rasa - Silentium.
17 minutes of absolute peace.
On Youtube, there´s one video with a vignette from it, so I´m adding it as well, even though it may be a repost:

The incriminated part starts at 2:48.

Hm, that´s one horrible post I´ve made here. Too much yerba mate, I guess.
Ah, well.

A surprise bonus to put the post in better shape.

Jazzy gazer is a little tougher...I'll have to see what I can come up with.

I've been overdosing on Birthday Massacre via MySpace. Still haven't found their cd in a store, so I'll probably have to break down on get it online. Did come across something fun via MySpace connections, though, or rather, it came across me.

If ya like Gigolo Aunts or Jellyfish, (that's Byrds + Beatles + modern production, for you oldtimers) I think you'll find this appealling:

"Do You Wanna" by happenstance

edit- OK, some jazz-ish possibilities for you, DeepO (actually a fair lean toward trip-hop in a couple cases):
Flux cd from LSD: "City Moon"
Raymond Scott Woolson: "This Tragedy Transformed"
Czarles: "Another Try"
Cork: "Somethingelectric" (I think this qualifies as a very rare cd that I own)

edit2- I assume you already know about Boards of Canada?

Although I haven't been in the mood for proper gazing the past week or two, I would be a total failure as a disciple of the Waze of the Gaze if I didn't give this new group a little love:

Just to add in on the Ulrich Schnauss debate. "In a Strangely Isolated Place" by Ulrich Schnauss very quickly becomes annoying. That was my experience with the album at least. The melody compositions were too simple.
Since then I've stayed away from him. If you like chilled/ambient music I would rather recommend Stars of the Lid. "Even if You're Never Awake (Deuxieme)" is one of their greater songs from their album "Stars of the Lid and their Refinement of the Decline".

And personally I prefer Board's of Canada's latest album "The Campfire Headphase". Mostly because of the general acoustic or natural sound it has. But well, BoC's albums can't really be divided into grades of quality. They are all good. Though I have yet to experience Geogaddi.

Currently I'm going through Ennio Morriocone's repertoire for the films of Sergio Leone. What a soundtrack composer.

I´ve got The Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid but I´m not using it as a chillout music. Usually, I put volume really up and let my flat shake.
Also, Lustmord.
And yeah, Schnauss is compositionally pretty average pop but I really like to be washed by those soundwaves from time to time.

Ennio Morricone´s work with Leone is the pinnacle of film soundtracking. Even Hitchock/Herrmann weren´t that congenial.
I still can´t believe that Morricone and Leone were attending the same elementary school.

Currently listening to Morphine´s Cure for Pain:
