I've now played ~10 hours of this game.

If it keeps being this good, it's GOTY for me - perhaps even game of the decade.

My only current concern is that it'll end :'(

Is this, really, so good?? I need a good game. Can't wait for Friday

Keep in mind that it's mostly based on initial enthusiasm.

But, certainly right now - I think it's absolutely brilliant.

I generally don't play games on my Xbox - but this one is executed with such passion and has an utterly AMAZING feel to the controls (especially the combat system) that I just haven't been able to put it down, even though I was starting to really enjoy Assassin's Creed 2.

That said, it's not unlike me to have a very positive reaction when a game comes out that seems to do everything right (within its genre), and I had the same initial response to both Risen and Dragon Age recently. Both those games ended up being merely good to really good. Both games had problems that I didn't notice for the first several hours of play.

But still, this one is something special - and Rockstar deserve all the support they can get by doing something so different, SO right. I can't believe some of the things they implemented simply because it's part of what we've seen in old westerns, like herding cattle or breaking in horses. Might sound lame, but it's executed to perfection and is only sparingly part of missions. I never expected to enjoy such things, but I did - and greatly so.

As I said, if this keeps up - it will be THE western game to set the standard for many years to come.

Oh, and note that while I liked GTA4 a lot, it was marred with a ton of issues that put it down to "decent" level for me.

RDR is a lot more flexible with its checkpoint/save system and doesn't in any way encourage pointless and boring activities like the "socialising with friends" thing of GTA4.

Well, you are using the same words as me for describing GTA4, so i am optimist for RDR.

Now, where is my whiskey shot??

Something like 20 reviews now, with none under 9.0. Looks like a fantastic game. Mine is on the way from Amazon.

I'm normally not an online gamer, but I re-upped my Live subscription so I could go tooling around the Old West.

p.s. Sorry, apparently one outfit gave it an 8.0 (Eurogamer UK). All others have been 90+.

Thanks for chiming in DArtagnan!

I have a twitter search going for RDR so approaching information overload, but the reviews and someone 'of the watch' giving blessings look to make this an enjoyable play.

Can you play poker in game? Hard to find definitive answers, but it appears you can in SP, not in MP.

Not huge, but still … every tick on the immersion meter helps.

Also, there is free DLC in June (co-op)

Yup, you can definitely play Texas Hold Em poker in SP. Haven't tried MP yet.

Sorry, apparently one outfit gave it an 8.0 (Eurogamer UK). All others have been 90+.

EG UK is quickly heading to irrelevance. So many reviews of late read of 9 or 10s to be donned a 7 or 8 (RDR), and vice-versa (The DA:O review read like it was going to be a 6, but got an 8). They should just stop giving scores as what they say otherwise is actually relevant, but too many people just skip to the score.

Seems like they are trying to be statistical outliers on metacritic to perhaps draw hits.

Edge is about the only remaining site I actually trust.

PS FWIW I would give DA:O a 6/10

This game is awesome. I played it for about 9 straight hours and would have kept going if my wife didn't come home from work...

BTW, if any mods happen upon this, could we get this thread merged with the other RDR thread, half a page down?

I rented RDR (PS3) yesterday, and played for most of the night. After seeing such praise heaped upon it, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. After a few hours, it just felt like GTA in the Old West to me. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I'm not a big fan of GTA personally.

If it's "GTA with horses," it seems like an improved GTA, with better controls, checkpoints, no cellphone calls, better graphics, better environment. I wasn't a fan of GTA, but because the inner city thing got boring for me. I love the Old West setting. And the improvements over GTA seem pretty significant. Of course, it's still the same engine, and it's still Rockstar, so you're going to get a lot of similarities.

I don't think that players who dislike GTA will suddenly find themselves liking RDR due to the easily identifiable similarities from the engine. It's kind of the same issue that BioWare had with people (me included) saying Jade Empire felt like KotOR.

I love the GTA series and I can't really see any GTA in RDR — probably because I'm so used to the control scheme and general presentation…

What I find great about this game are the characters, the world, and the style just to name a few. To me, it's all perfect. I've been wanting an Old West game for a looong time and this is really close to what I wanted.

Oh, and if anybody wants to form a posse and goof around, my Live tag is also Korplem.

I've also heard the quests, the weapons, the random encounters, the outfits, the mid-mission checkpoints -- all of this is improved over GTA IV.

It's good to hear, actually. Sounds like there's a lot to do.
