Hmmm, I like having modern day issues in there but just changing the word "marijuana" to something else? That's not exactly subtle. The whole point of pushing these issues into a sci-fi/fantasy context is to get people to drop all the political baggage and pre-conceptions around the issue. If you don't give the issue a decent mask, that won't work.
