Didn't really have a good thread to drop this into even though we've discussed it more than a few times. So here we go.

http://news.yahoo.com/election-day-2013-tale-two-republicans-highlight-split-155445163.html

"If the polls hold true and [Ken] Cuccinelli loses, it shows that successful Republicans drive down the middle of the right-hand side of the road -- they don't drive off into the ditch on the right," said Whit Ayres, a veteran Virginia-based Republican pollster.

Leave it to My Man Mitch to point in the right direction:
"His apparent success proves that people will reward decisive action and truth-telling, and that people are prepared to look beyond maybe their own party affiliations or even ideological predispositions where they see an instance of effective action in the public interest," said former Gov. Mitch Daniels, R-Ind., who is now president of Purdue University. "Plainly, that's what's going on when a guy like Gov. Christie is that successful in a state like the one he lives in."

I think if we get real campaign donation reforms a LOT of problems will be solved, including parties being hijacked by well heeled extremists...

Just don't see it happening. The folks that make the rules are the ones profiting most from the status quo. Second place probably goes to those wealthy extremists on both sides that can afford to purchase influence, so chalk up another tally for the status quo.

It's typical government--the clowns running the show have no desire to clean up the circus. Just might lead one to the Reagan Approach--government is the problem and needs to be throttled. ;)

That's been tried by both parties at various times, usually by whichever party is losing the fundraising race at the time. Yes, even the evil corporate minions in the Republican party have waved the campaign finance reform banner more than once. Honestly, we've probably made the better (but still failed) stabs at it since the Democrats tend to revert to whining rather than problem solving when it's their turn with the banner, for whatever reason that might be.

Never gets any traction and the general public doesn't understand the problem enough to stay excited about it beyond the next Lindsey Lohan scandal. Add in that the whole system, from government to lobbyists to the media, have no real interest in change and every attempt from either side is doomed.

"Chris Christie has defined himself around this theme -- that he's the person that's different from the national party, the person who's distancing himself from extreme views,"
That's the important quote (IMO) for two reasons:
1- Christie has won because he is Christie and not because he is a Republican;
2- He run his campaign not with the full support of NJ Republicans but ALMOST against them.

It is a very simple equation - those with the money control the system. Period. They can then control the information flow, 'kill off' opposing voices, and buy the support of those who should really oppose them. Whenever anyone attempts change, it just doesn't happen because those with money make sure it doesn't.

I look at it this way - Katy Perry puts out an album and it WILL be #1, guaranteed. Why? Because there are millions of $ at stake - the record label buys millions of plays on radio stations and on streaming stations all over the nation and internet - and people respond to that sort of thing.

The idea that 'everyone has the same voice' is laughable. The nation is controlled and run by a few hundred/thousand people at most, those with the most money and power. We have those rights deemed acceptable by the ruling class.
