The ever-popular "Currently Listening" thread

OK. There's just no accounting for musical taste, or the lack thereof. I've clearly gone right over the edge.

I think I can clearly see what drew you to this clip dte--and I think the musical genre is moot. ;)

If only I had that excuse...

I heard the song on the radio a few times before I went looking for clips. :(

@Asbjoern- I assume you've heard Velocity Girl? If not, you should. You might want to see if you can find anything from the Popguns (won't be easy, but you might have better luck since their record label is on your side of the pond).

For me--
I finally got off my duff and spun the new Daysleepers cd. WOW!
6 of 10 tracks at MySpace
Unfortunately, "Distant Creatures" isn't one of the tracks, but "Tiger in the Sea" is a good place to start.

No, I've not heard of them, but I will check them out. Thanks for the recommendations.

And I will be attending the Roskilde Festival this summer. My Bloody Valentine and the Danish band Rumskib, that you were hearing some time ago dte, will be playing there. I am looking forward to hear them play.
Other prominent bands at Roskilde are: Radiohead, Mogwai, Bonnie "Prince" Billy etc. etc.

Does anybody here at the Watch listen to Mogwai perchance? Brilliant post-rock.

@Asbjoern- Popguns might actually be a little too traditional pop for you, but I'd definitely give Velocity Girl a swing. You might like their older stuff better (much more "garage" feel to it), although I prefer their later stuff which is more indiepop oriented.
Newer: "Sorry Again"
Older:"Audrey's Eyes" (actually the closest to a pop song on the Copacetic cd)

@Mike- as you know, I know next-to-nothing about jazz, so that cd might not be up your alley. I thought I recognized one of the artists (besides Herbie Hancock) as one that you liked, but I could be wrong.

For me-
"Dizzy" by Throwing Muses
(best I could do was a live clip, but it's fairly true to the cd)

Velocity Girl is indeed very garage-like. Though I'm also more into an indie/lo-fi sound, so I don't think they are to my taste. "Crushed" by The Popguns is a good song.

I've been listening some more to The Radio Dept. and here's a shoegazer.

The Radio Dept. - Every Time

I watched the film "Limbo" yesterday (and I can only recommend it. It had an atypical narrative, which kept you interested even during otherwise, normally boring scenes). The song "Lift Me Up" by The Boss was played during the credits. A perfect choice.

Adding some songs to harden the thread a bit .

Killing Joke - Hosannas From the Basements Of Hell:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak5TxzBzfDw
The clip is ultimate camp but the song is FIRE!

Bruce Dickinson - Chemical Wedding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ8286CdIn4
I really like two of his solo albums - Balls to Picasso and The Chemical Wedding.
This is the title song from the latter.

Devin Townsend - Christeen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcfDxq8Zw5A&feature=related
Just a great rock song from his fabulous Infinity album.

Opeth - The Drapery Falls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvLn8j4c5l4
One of their best songs. It's from the Blackwater Park album.
It's multifaceted, heavy and soft, as most of their compositions.
The "heavy to soft" transition at 7:48 is completely genius.

Elton John vs Europe - Counting Rockets
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgs73jG5TJ4
Well, this is the cheese song of this post. It's a really inspired mashup made by Divide & Kreate project - http://www.divideandkreate.com/
I think those two songs work great together.

I'm adding two bonuses to sorta tie the post together:
Killing Joke - Eighties
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Zlf_17hecY
The song Kurt Cobain loved so much ;).

The Damned - Life Goes On
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4J2aU6glt0
The song Jaz Coleman loved so much .

I'm amazed how well those meshed.

Yeah, me too, it's one of my favourite mashups, Stayin' Alive in The Wall by Wax Audio being another one: http://www.waxaudio.com.au/downloads/mashopolos
Especially the blending in the chorus is just hilarious.

Currently I'm listening to Ween, Pennsylvanian, more or less, spoof band which made some great tunes during 90's.
My favourite record by them is The Mollusk from 1997. It's both funny and pleasant listen well suited for hot summer days.

Some tracks from said album:

The Mollusk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5K_w9Tbhoc

Mutilated Lips - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s8fBQJEuvM

I'll Be Your Johnny On the Spot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxC3Faa6BaM

The Blarney Stone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbq9I1rTofg

Transdermal Celebration - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU91POX33aE

Waving My Dick in the Wind - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSD-Tk0Z3zI

And as a bonus, here's Buenas Tardes Amigo form their Chocolate & Cheese album (1994).
It's such a great story! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFg3B_N39i4

Chemical Wedding is one of the most underrated, unknown metal classics there is. Also notable is his Accident of Birth cd, also w/ Adrian Smith on guitar. If you havent checked it out, youre missing out big time imho

Deep-O--I love Ween! My son turned me on to them and they absolutely rule. The Mollusk is also my favorite, though Piss Up A Rope is a close second. Thanks for the clips, especially the classic Buenos Tardes with the spaghetti western bridge.
...maybe I'd sell you a chicken/with poison interlaced with the meat...

That Opeth cut was also excellent--Blackwater Park is on my list if I ever get a job and have money again. :)

Last thing I listened to was this old Billy Idol cut myself--this is the 1984 MTV version. It pretty much epitomizes everything that went wrong with the '80's, but I have a weakness for the sneers and the wristspikes.

I have all Dickinson's solo works, those two I've mentioned just happen to be my favourite. And I agree that Accident of Birth is very good.

That Opeth cut was also excellent--Blackwater Park is on my list if I ever get a job and have money again. :)

Besides Blackwater Park I'd also recommend Still Life from 1999. It's probably their most compact one, great from start to finish, perfectly balanced and it has probably the best sounding acoustic guitars of all their records.

Here's the first song from Still Life, The Moor:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XijodYFQbrY
Some of the texts (not the lyrics) in video are pretty silly, but the song is great.
The transition starting as 5:32 is one of my all time favourite moments in heavy music.

Here's the mellow song from the same album, Benighted:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjtZW_FCSTo
I love the atmosphere of this one!

Oh, and while I'm at their softer side, I'm adding what I consider to be the best three songs from their fully mellow output, Damnation:

Windowpane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IzLDT73bkk
The guitar solo section in the second half is just beautiful, well, eh, everything in this song is.

In My Time Of Need - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x6YclsLHN0
A bit of pinkfloydian mood here.

To Rid The Disease - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBgoiLiNuXg
Chorus of this one gives me some serious chills.

Well, I'm ending the post with something from the more typical Opeth's repertoire. It's another song from Blackwater Park, Bleak:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BdZ1xFysF8
A lot of great moments in this one.

Along with Devin Townsend, Mikael Akerfeldt (the mind behind Opeth) is my favourite contemporary rock artist. He has great compositional skills, is a very good guitarist, his growls are state-of-art ones (I usually don't like such vocals) and his clean vocals are one of the best in genre. Although he's sometimes slightly under tune, the emotion more than makes up for it.

Well, that's all for my Opeth post :).
