Mass Effect - PC Preview @ GameSpy

After 25 years or so as a dedicated hardcore gamer, I can't avoid smiling a little when people still claim that developers or journalists are giving a fair picture of a commercially driven game.

The level of hype and machinery in place to promote titles and give people absurdly inaccurate expectations is immense, and it's so commonplace that it's not even recognized as a problem. That's just how the world turns, and especially places like the US are utterly saturated with misleading advertisements and everyone seems totally ok with lying (or call it creative interpretation of truth) straightfaced as long as there's a buck to be made.

Ok, fine, some of us are "wise" enough not to buy into the hype - precisely because we've been taught through experience, but I don't think that, in any way, excuses this horrid standard.

Then again, it's a battle that requires a passionate interest in both truth and gaming as a whole for us to stand a chance, and the people in that arena are outnumbered by those more interested in the quick buck, by an unimaginably huge factor.

In effect, it's only going to get worse. Hollywood has clearly demonstrated the future for this industry, and those of us lamenting it will have to contend with the occasional exception, as in a game that was made with a shared passion for the art.
