GOP Corruption and Obstruction

I agree it's bad form. Not excusing it. I hate racists, homophobes, et al. I just got out of a lovely two hour blogtv session arguing with someone trying to defend his transphobia.:p

I understand there are a few idiots in every group, but I think the idiots we've elected to office should refrain from the screaming of epithets while they're in the buildings and drawing the salaries that *all* of the citizens of the country provide them, not just their goofier supporters.
I'm of course, referring to this guy.

And saying you're going to keep being an idiot because it's a matter of principal really doesn't make you look any better. ;)

So is it just the transgendered that induces the phobia? I have to admit that the idea(all the operations, drugs, etc) kind of creeps me out a bit myself. I don't mind the people themselves, though.

Also on Barney Frank--I had to look up my favorite quote of his the other day and I feel like passing it on while we're on the subject of he and his partner being jeered at while walking up the capitol steps:
On the dems losing the majority in 1996::"I'm used to being in the minority. I'm a left-handed gay Jew. I've never felt, automatically, a member of any majority.." ;)

The guy (an atheist socialist from austria) I was arguing with said "Do you have NO SHAME?" to an m-to-f transgendered person in the room. He then proceeded to refer to her as "IT" instead of "she" (or even "he"). He said it was disgusting and weird and that he would kill himself if he ever thought that way.

So basically me and a few others spent the next few hours trying to explain to him the scientific basis of transgender feelings. His response was to ignore all of it, literally state his refusal to investigate, and say because it was his opinion (WHICH HE ADMITTED WAS IRRATIONAL) that we were 'just as bad as he was' if we criticized him for it.

@Mags Well, he certainly is validating his idiocy… Unless his constituency is also mainly idiots, he is doing himself and the GOP a disservice with his nutjob behavior.

This atmosphere created by the Republicans I think is VERY destructive to the fragile fabric of our society.

It is 2010, which means it is way past time for decent Americans to rise up against this kind of garbage, to fight it aggressively wherever it appears. And it is time for every American of good will to hold the Republican Party accountable for its role in tolerating, shielding and encouraging foul, mean-spirited and bigoted behavior in its ranks and among its strongest supporters.

The G.O.P. poisons the political atmosphere and then has the gall to complain about an absence of bipartisanship.

The toxic clouds that are the inevitable result of the fear and the bitter conflicts so relentlessly stoked by the Republican Party — think blacks against whites, gays versus straights, and a whole range of folks against immigrants — tend to obscure the tremendous damage that the party’s policies have inflicted on the country. If people are arguing over immigrants or abortion or whether gays should be allowed to marry, they’re not calling the G.O.P. to account for (to take just one example) the horribly destructive policy of cutting taxes while the nation was fighting two wars.

Sounds a little like Nazi Germany? You bet…

I agree, but I also think at the same time the Dems should stop inviting Jackson and Sharpton to their dinner parties if they want to take the moral high ground, because to be honest both parties are crappy when it comes to this.

So his violated tender feelings about the sanctity of gender can all be expressed without consideration of any pain they might inflict on another human being, but YOU should refrain from defending that person because you're doing the same to him??? Sounds like an exercise in basic illogic to me.

He does sound like he may not be very stable though, if he thinks suicide is a better solution to conflicted sexuality than resolving it.

Point of order, Thrasher--I believe Barack campaigned on a middle class tax cut, and there's still two wars going on. Is it still a "horribly destructive policy"? Or only when repubs do it?

Did you actually believe it? Just from a pure logistical standpoint his promise was BS from the start.

I didn't care about it. But what I did care about was his promise to end the wars. And that hasn't happened. :(
I have no doubt you'd just assume avoid the whole thought. But, unfortunately, you brought it up. So then, I'll ask again...

Barack is trumpeting tax cuts while there's still 2 wars going on. Is this "horribly destructive policy" or not? You seemed to think it was (based on the fact you quoted that specific part of that assinine Times article) when a repub did it. A simple "Yes, Obama's policies are horribly destructive" or "No, I'm a raging hypocrite" will suffice, me thinks.

I did not bring up tax cuts you did. My post was about the venomous environment promulgated by the GOP. You changed the subject to taxes. The taxes comment in the article was ancillary, but you seemed to have grabbed onto it, rather than addressing the most important point of the article.

That's my senator. Always at the forefront of ridiculous. ;) My husband's biggest forays into the alarming technological world of the internets have revolved around his outraged emails to this guy. Coburn's stopped responding, but at least my husband has a hobby.

LOL! Quite frankly, I am shocked that there is coverage for Viagra. Right up there with rhinoplasty elective surgery. ;)

Viagra is covered, but not LASIK. Why? LASIK is 'elective'. Apparently getting a boner is not.
