Well, there you go. The new IP that Gas Powered Games signed with Sega a little while ago turns out to be Dungeon Siege in Space:
Chris Taylor’s Gas Powered Games and SEGA Team Up to Create a Spiritual Successor to the Critically Acclaimed Dungeon Siege Series for the PC
SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (July 6, 2007) – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced the development of Space Siege™ for the PC. Developed by Gas Powered Games, SEGA has tapped Chris Taylor’s creative prowess to create this engaging action-RPG title. Space Siege features a deep and compelling storyline, intense combat and a dynamic character development system. Space Siege is scheduled to ship for the PC in North America and Europe in Q1 of 2008.
Space Siege takes place in the confines of the Armstrong, one of the few remaining colonization ships carrying the last bastions of human civilization after a devastating attack on Earth from an unknown alien race. Players will take the role of Seth Walker, a cybernetics engineer suddenly thrust into a struggle to save humanity from extermination. As the adventure progresses Seth is offered opportunities to sacrifice pieces of his humanity for cybernetic upgrades that will assist him in his mission to preserve the human race. But what price will he pay to save his own humanity? Only the player can decide Seth’s ultimate fate.
“Chris Taylor and his talented team at Gas Powered Games are recognized as leading innovators in the industry,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. “Space Siege promises to be a compelling and innovative successor to the very popular Dungeon Siege franchise.”
Incorporating innovative cybernetic augmentations into its storyline, Space Siege explores the dilemmas faced while keeping one’s humanity in the face of adversity. Cybernetic augmentations can be performed on every part of Seth’s body. On the extreme end, players will be able to outfit Seth with cybernetic upgrades that will leave little or none of his original humanity intact. But this choice comes with the risk of alienating Seth from the people he’s trying to save. Players can also insist on preserving Seth’s humanity by not using upgrades, instead forging ahead clearing the Armstrong of its alien invaders with natural human ingenuity and strength. Such a decision will increase the difficulty of completing his mission of uncovering and eliminating the alien menace that’s bent on destroying the human race.
Space Siege features a dynamic storyline based upon the decisions the player makes throughout the course of the game. Based upon the cybernetic modifications the player chooses to make on Seth’s body, NPC’s will react and interact with the player differently and, ultimately, different story resolutions will be reached. Space Siege will feature a separate immersive co-op multiplayer mode allowing up to four players to create and experience a completely unique mission structure.

If they continue to what they did in Dungeon Siege II, sign me up.

Dungeon Siege and Broken World was crap, but DS2 was quite different with a nice and well described world and companions with their own miniquests/attitudes.

It sounds like I can finally change my screen saver after 5 years. Good, because I was getting bored of the fantasy theme.

Be afraid.

Feel free to ignore my usual anti-PR-hype-mangling-of-the-english-language rant:

usual anti-pr rant/Let's see. What kind of a game will it be? We have "dynamic(2x)," "deep and compelling", by a team of "leading innovators," "compelling and innovative", (yes, that would follow)"engaging'(that one's a little less common)..where's "immersive?' What, it's not "immersive???" ah--last line. That's better./end rant

I now know exactly nothing about what kind of game it will be, except that it is just like every other game ever described in a press release.

I enjoyed DS2 a lot and don't doubt that Chris Taylor can be innovative and stuff, but can't a game be announced without using every single cliche and buzzword known to man? I think the PR guys just cut-and-paste from each others blurbs. ;)

IMO it's generic and forgettable at best and a turn off at worst, making people doubt that the game will be any better than the nonsense used to describe it.

OK, the next developer that uses the term 'innovation' and 'immershun' as well as'compelling' gets seriously (symbolicly) thrown against a :wall: I'm very tired of all this (over)hyping of games that don't deliver what they promised to do when real life kicks in aka when psuh comes to show. It is very annoying and irritating that developers (and publishers) don't trust their audience to just say 'hey, we've made a new game, they have these and these features. We've done our best to make the game, there will be some fearures, if you don't like, but hey,if don't like the game, then don't buy it.'

In this say and age, that would be immersive and innovative...

And didn't Deus Ex do the thing with the cyber augmentations already ?

Wasn't there recently an action-RPG that did the same ?
(Sorry, but I tend to not memorizing names of Action-RPGs ... )

I am with JemyM - Dungeon Siege was automated boredom, Broken World added nothing, but DS 2 was surprisingly decent.

I don't know whether or not you will call Mass Effect an action RPG or not, but I think that the vanguard(?) class in Mass Effect can use some of sort of (cyber) augmentations to further their use of biotics...

And it seems that Too Human maybe is doing the same thing...

It's just like the post-modern architecture in the 1980's. They were all doing pink building with enonormous heights which had enormus glass facaded as well.

Even though they claimed they were all innovative and immersive...
(yaaah, this is my post # 200 :) )

LOL ! :D

To me, DS1 was pure railroading, with the best content cut (in singleplayer) and available only for the MP part (like the Hubs, for example).
One could see & access them, though, through playing an MP session by doing as if the own PC was the server, then, the 1 character could play within the "normal" world.

I like what GPG does, but I was hoping that they would step away from Dungeon Crawling type RPG and go for something deeper, more creative or story-driven. Still, I'll anticipate this one.
