You buy a game upfront and then can play it. There are some alternate models for parts of asia if I remember rightly - free game but buy game time cards for multiplayer for eg.

Interesting. I haven't paid much attention since finishing (and being disappointed with) Wings of Liberty, but that's something that's definitely been changed since their original announcements about SC2. It was originally made to sound as if it was going to be 3 separate games.

Still, it didn't need to be an expansion that would require Wings of Liberty. I think the reason for that is obvious.
