NPR has run a couple of reports on a book by David Ewalt called Of Dice and Men

It finishes with the future of the franchise as a name in the realm of video games.

If you know anything about the history of TSR these reports are just the tip of the iceberg - its pretty much a tax payer funded ad for the book - I imagine the book gets into quite a bit of depth that even Gygax never complained about on his website in the late 90's.
