The missing piece to your puzzle is diversity. 20 years ago, gamers were largely children and teens. Today, gamers are common among most age groups, and the average gamer age is in the late 20s. As such, those gamers may still consider themselves enthusiasts, but have careers and families to juggle, and therefore less gaming time, making them more appreciative of simpler, streamlined games.
