OK, but I still believe that Microsoft's (only) goal with JE was always to boost Xbox sales in the Asian/Pacific reason. It doesn't really matter in that context who had the idea for JE first or whether it is a "true" JRPG.
In fact, I did just read an old GameSpot interview about JE when the game was revealed at the Tokyo Games Show. Not E3. Not that big show in London (can't remember the name of it). Nor any other Western game show. Nope. TGS. Seems obvious to me that MS chose that setting to say a loud and clear 'hello' to the Asian market .

Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language…they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.
