Strongest atmosphere

Let me hijcack the thread and extend it to also conver your 3 most athmospheric pieces of music.

Here are mine:
1. Goreckij: Symphony no 3 (of sorrowful songs)
2. Pink Floyd: Echoes
3. Yes: Awaken

pibbur who of course should have mentioned Stratosfear by Tangerine Dream but chose not to.

whole genres are devoted to atmosphere:

film noir
german expressionist films of the silent era
westerns
spaghetti westerns

gothic novels, including later works by bram stoker and the bronte sisters
romance literature such as tales of king arthur and ivanhoe
1001 arabian nights
anything by jules verne (steampunk)
anything by edgar rice burroughs

etc.

How do you define "atmosphere" for music, though? Setting and maintaining a mood. or ambient stuff that takes you to a location, or recordings that make you feel like you're right there with the performer, or something else entirely?

Good question … and I guess what Lucky said also holds true for music, there are whole genres devoted to atmosphere.

Anyway, mine:
- Mila Mar - Nova - unfathomably sad
- Röyksopp - What Else Is There - hauntingly beautiful
- Blind Guardian - The Bard's Song - always makes me think of every fantasy book I ever read, all at once

I won't mention game music or movie soundtracks since there'd be way too many titles to list. The genre thing.

Now, tell us: What's your favourite game music?

Wow an Aguirre the Wrath of God reference! I never thought I'd hear that title referenced anywhere...

Movies:
Alien
BladeRunner
The Thing (Carpenter)
Conan the Barbarian (1982 John Milius)

That last two might seem like strange picks but for me they left a lasting impression due to atmosphere.

Games:
Morrowind
Dead Space
Baldurs Gate
Temple of Elemental Evil
