Joystiq - How RPGs colonised some of 2012s best games

What do you recommend in the shooter genre?

Some of my personal favorites from the past few years:

- Crysis series
- F.E.A.R series
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R series
- Metro 2033
- Anything with Tom Clancy on it. While the Rainbow Six Vegas games and the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games were nothing like the original games in their respective series, they ended up still being very decent games in my opinion. Just different, not necessarily worse.
- Deus Ex Human Revolution
- BioShock series
- Just Cause 2
- CoD series including Black Ops
- Battlefield Bad Company 2 + Battlefield 3 (single player)
- Mafia 2
- GTA series + L.A. Noire
- Batman Arkham series

All of the above shooters have way more to offer than just straight run and gun shooter gameplay. From the mentioned (by Couchpotato) cover and stealth mechanics and cinematic story presentation to managing inventory, ammo, powers, limited weapon carrying capacity or any other resource management... it would be doing a lot of modern shooters injustice to look at them as these simple games where you just make stuff go *boom*.

If we're talking GTA-style games, too, I'll add Sleeping Dogs. They do a pretty decent job of capturing the feel of an old Kung Fu movie, while still keeping it modern. Much better melee combat than GTA, less shooting.
