Could be already deleted. Such a shame !
It was such a funny read !

Google at least shows a fragment of it :

R U there Feather? My warfwizzie is le suck. pls tell me why? u can't, can U? * puts on mascara *powders nose. Honestly.... ... u no le Warforged ...

"Feather" could be "Feather Of Sun", one of the devs.

Very unpleasant news for me :

From Novemer 24th on, DDO will cease to be in German language.

No more translations, everything will grow more and more to become English-language.

Right now, I'm fairly angry over their decision (even altgough I can see it : They probably decided that the German-languuage player base was just too small for them, considering the translation costs).

(And there's a rant by me there as well, so don't be surprised. And you know me, how I react towards these things.)

I think the English language has become the norm language for most games if you want to see it internationally. E. g. the Polish the Witcher didn't sell well until it was translated to English.

I'm from Norway and I've learnt how to play games in English. Even kids here play in English without having too much problem. So you just have to get used to playing in a foreign language.

Alrik speaks English so well so I guess he can quickly adapt to the English version of DDO. :)

My view is that it's good to have a common language to play on. That means we all see the same and can discuss the same. E. g. we had some situations where Alrik wanted to give us an item (described in German for him) and we didn't understand what is was because we didn't understand the what the similar English term would be.

I think big titles would come in different languages because you can sell enough copies in all countries. Germany is a big country regarding computer games. So if DDO drops the German language from their game it shows more that DDO is not played a lot in Germany.

Since Turbine is such a small company I can understand they want to focus their effort into fixing bugs and making new content instead of spending money on translations.

The main reason to choose English for games is that English is understood in most countries in the world. It's often the second language at school in countries not having English as their native language. French, Spanish and Italian are spoken in former colonies. German is not spoken much outside Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Some countries have German as their second language. Spanish, French, Italian and German are big languages, but they are not a world language like English.

This is what I blieve as well.

French, Spanish and Italian are spoken in former colonies.

I still don't quite understand why they don't have support for that.

Personally, having English as the "world language" rather undermines the importance of local languages. Denglish might become the norm in Germany, especially with game-playing Teenagers.

I understand why English is so important - yet I don't like it. Call me nationalistic regarding languages if you like to, but I still want to have my game experience in my own language, not in another one.

And this is why it is so alien to me to think of people in contries playing games not in their own languages, but in English. Is this "language colonization"or what ?

To me, language is very much conected with culture. Denying people the use of their own languages was in the past often used as a tool of supressing peoples.
Denying me to use my own language forces me to adopt a different language with different grammar and a different cultural background. Which - in my opinion, personally - creates a mish-mash of both.

I have read the outcries here when games weren't translated into English. It impressed me. It even forces game developers to use "the one and only" language. To me, it feels like a kind of "cultural domination". Even in science, more and more scientidfic terms from single languges get more and more replaced by English-language terms.

The positive thing with this is that people from all over the world can use English as an "intermediate" language, as a "bridge language".

On the other hand this also gives natural English speakers a huge advantage. Because they just don't need to learn any other languages anymore. They can remain lazy in terms of learning languages and be fine with that. Where everyone else in he world has to learn it.

I hope that the world will end up with a common language everybody can speak and write. Language barriers between countries is not good in a global world.

I don't mind having English as a second language everybody learn at school. Maybe I feel like that because my own language, Norwegian, is spoken by so few people that it could never be selected as a common language.

People from the big European countries take pride in their culture and language. So they feel it's unfair that they have to speak English (spoken by the "equal" European major power Great Britain). E. g. French people don't accept that English is more used than French. They consider French a more cultural and higher language and hate to speak English. I think you see some of the same in Germany, Spain, Italy and Russia too.

Because of that I don't think it's realistic to have a common language for the world. I wouldn't mind losing Norwegian for a common language everybody can speak. Separate languages is part of the past and not the future in my opinion. However, I don't have any illusions that I will see a common language in my time. They tried with Esperanto and that language is almost not used at all.

We already had "common languages" in our world history, so that's not uncommion, it is just English right now.

During the Roman Empires, Greek languuage was the "common language" of the upper classes, wheras Latin soon became the common language for everybiody else living within Roman territories. This so much that he people in hat's now Spain and France, but also in Romania, kind of "lost" their original languages and took Latin instead.

Personally, I feel a strong bond between language and culture, and loing my own language is - to me - like losing my own culture. That's why I react so aggressively.

So I see they have the FREE01 to take 100 TP off any 1 item. I also see Devil Assault on sale this week for 245 points. It looks like I can combine the 2 sales together to get Devil Assault for 145 TP? Good deal...has anyone played that and can say it is worth it?

I wouldn't invest in Devil Assault. Simply not much to it. The main appeal is a low level raid, but I haven't seen a run in the LFM list in forever. There is some decent loot for low level toons, IIRC, but evidently not good enough to get raid groups forming.

I'm thinking about combining sales to get a good deal on my next TR heart.

There are MUCH better adventure packs than DA. If you don't have them, the dessert or gianthold are FAR more useful.

Alrik, while I can understand the link between culture and language and I specialised in cultural history at university many years ago, the MAIN purpose of language is COMMUNICATION and that is what English has become; a means for most people to communicate internationally.

I have DEvil Assault, and I wouldn't recommend it much. It's too small for me, I think, but on the other way it gives a unique look into DDO's past.

I would recommend Desert or Gianthold, too.

However, if you have lots of points available, 3-Barrel-Cove is also nice; it is, I think, the second largest wilderness area apart from the Desert and Gianthold.

Another thing I thought of today was to go for the heavy discount of MOTU and then substract the 100 points from that.

Perhaps I'll do that, if the discount if your the MOTU pack in the in-game DDO-store, too.
Personally, I don't think that it could get any cheaper soon.

@Corwin : Yes, like Latin in former times. But I find it sad that languages just die out.

I believe that each language has its own logic system - meaning : it determines the way we think, because of its grammar - this is what i believe without being able to prove it.
So, that means to me as well that when languages die out, not only the information stored in them gets lost, but also the way of thinking.
To me it's a bit like an animal species or a plant species dying out.

I actually like Devil's Assault, but IMO the quest is not worth running until Epic. The raid is worth the cost, but it's almost always run by either over-levels farming the base items to make epic, or on epic.

In that light, I'd make it the last pack you buy, after pretty much everything except Threnal, Restless Isles, and Druid's Deep, all of which I recommend to avoid.

Special offer only today:

75% off Menace of the Underdark

Thanks for posting it...I decided to purchase the Standard MOTU pack with the classic bundle. Very good deal, couldn't let it pass by. It's odd how the in-game DDO store didn't have this special only the ddo.com website...I would've completely missed it had you not posted.

Thanks again!
