VD has quickly penned an article at RPG Codex that takes apart the information we've seen so far on Fallout 3. Here's an excerpt from the piece, which is titled Fallout: Take Four -
To show that Bethesda understands and, like, totally digs the setting, the game features exploding nuclear reactors in cars and mind-blowing "tell me it's a joke" handheld nuclear catapults. In the example described in the Game Informer article, the main character, undoubtedly inspired by the famous Baron Munchausen, kills two giant ants by shooting at a NEARBY car's nuclear reactor. A small nuclear blast destroys the car and the ants, but ignores the resourceful main character, standing a few meters away. The nuclear catapult is an even more retarded concept and, hopefully, needs no explanation. Using nuclear explosions in close combat in a survival game that watches your rad count is kinda stupid. Even for Bethesda.
More information.

Dont think I have ever seen so many sandy vaginas in a single thread.

One person quotes the thread perfectly:

A lot of your commentary is just spot on, but I think it would be more effective if it didn't read like a nerd rage, since it feels like you're making it personal with Bethesda, instead of just letting your sarcastic text stand on its own and let the reader decide just how stupid they are.

Reading the comments to VD's article (which is a good opinionative piece, even if I don't agree with everything), reminds me why I rarely visit the Codex!!

Vault dweller is not exactly the best nuetral guy to write an article about fallout...the guy definately has issues and one of the reasons I never visit that site anymore.

He does. But if you learn how to read his articles, and the way he writes them (underlighting what he likes and highlighting what he hates), he does usually cover all points well.

A neutral guy I'm not, that's for sure. However, the article presents facts and my analysis, for the lack of a better word, of these facts. I didn't even criticize the switch to first person view and real time combat, because that would have been too subjective. So, feel free to disagree and post your own conclusions, but dismissing the article simply because the Fallout fans can't be trusted is kinda silly.

Yes, VD is always worth reading. I enjoy controversial articles, especially ones which challenge my own PoV. What I don't like are assinine comments springing from such an article. They insult the person who wrote it. I might disagree with some of VD's opinions, but I'm not going to insult HIM. Attack the ideas, not the person, is what I was brought up to believe!!

By the way, it wasn't a nuclear explosion when the guy shot the car, he hit the starter fuel tank and it exploded.

Well, according to the first game there was only one Forced Evolutionary Virus (F.E.V.) research facility, that was used to produce super mutants.

How does that explain the UNLIMITED super mutants in FO2?

Notice the "nucular" explosions in the background.

It's not.

Except for Volourn (who everybody feels safe to ignore), I don't really see what you mean (for this particular thread). But maybe then I have been there too long, I am sure I have become rather immune to the Codex style.

I guess people don't even know how game development works with most companies since if you knew you wouldn't write about the storyline and things going on in a press release 1.5 years before the games release. Most companies make a demo to show to the press and it usually doesn't have one thing to do with the released game and when it is released the game is usually far different then the first press demo. The whole way games are made and the PR is done for them throws out most of that article since it isn't even relevant to the game. The parts about the details given are very relevant and if there is enough complaints could get changed.

Another thing is that V.A.T.S. wasn't very detailed in the article and we don't have enough information on it to come to a conclusion about how good or bad the system is. I leave you with something Vault Dweller said in the other thread: "It is just cosmetics" (referring to the difference bettween First person and third person view) and with that I say that all view points are cosmetic. (including isometric)

PS. I have seen some of the demo videos that Bethesda has done in the past and they were not usually relevant to the final game at all and those were the later public demo videos.

PPS. With the press demo for Fallout 3 there could be from very little to nothing from it is the final game and also since it was just a demo for the press it would have been on rails without any choices since it's just to show off the engine.

My favorite line:
Looks like in the future nuclear fallouts are as common and about as dangerous as farts.

The action gamer / shooter side of me thinks it could be fun ... but it sounds more like a 'Fallout learns from the mistakes of Dark Messiah and does the same thing ... but better'.

That was my favorite line too!

It reminded me of a film I saw in school in the 1960s, when I was as a kid. It was all about atom bombs and how they were a good thing. The film suggested that atom bombs could be used to move mountains or cut big trenches in the earth (exploding them in a line, one after another). That film wasn't very concerned with nuclear fallouts either!

I have to say that I find VD's commentary to be close to spot on. It is depressing to watch the venerable and outstanding Wastland/Fallout/Fallout2 series end in what is, in all likelihood, going to be qualitative whimper - though no doubt FO3 (when it does appear) will be trumpeted as "completely new" "genre shattering" and "totally innovative" by the same weak minds as made such ludicrous comments as regards Oblivion. ...Yawn ...

I didn't read the comments, as last time I lurked the codex forums and clicked on a disguised link in someone's post it took me to a porn site--which is just fine if I had know, but the link was misleading....ANYway, I didn't read the comments, but in the article you can't help from feeling Vault Dweller's frustration. Seeing a Fallout sequel listed as an "action-rpg," lack of depth and that stupid sounding "Megaton" quest:

The sign above the gate reads: "Megaton." ... A massive undetonated bomb sits in the crater at the center of town ... Inside Moriarty's Bar you spy... Mister Burke. He'd like to get rid of Megaton - something about "a blight on the burgeoning urban landscape." ...You take the charge and head back outside. ... "It's about time," Mister Burke says, and hands you the detonator...There's no turning back after this. The money's not really that good, now that you think about it. You press the button anyway...

Say what? I guess we're aiming at a post-apocolyptic angst here, but it jars completely, since it trivializes the basic premise of the real FO's and makes the entire nuclear devastation thing meaningless and shallow.

blecch. Just blecch.:puke:
