Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital “pocket litter.”

If this isn't an "April's Fool" joke, then this is at least impressive.

Quite shocking, but in line with the US politics over the last decades. They already had huge survaillance systems scanning every email more than a decade ago in several countries. See the Echelon pages on Wikipedia.

This is the end of the last bits of digital privacy left in the world.

1984 really should be required reading for everyone.

The Big Brother crap is only part of it.

The "war on terrorism" is the perfect "war". The purpose or war is not to win. The purpose of war is perpetual warfare. Terrorism is perfect for this. The methods we use against terrorism are exactly what CREATES that terrorism in the first place. It's a never-ending cycle which is exactly what the war mongers want. Sorry, that was off topic...

I actually kinda assumed something like this (in the article) was already happening. Just not as completely as this.
