Internet Censorship

Censorship is extremly effective ( I am not saying it is good though )…. chinese gouverment has proven that.

It's a totalitarian regime with continued human rights violations in which most basic freedoms we take for granted are prohibited. I do not believe that's the kind of goal you are looking for.

But either way, what I am suggesting ( to shut down, maybe by means of using DNS servers/blocking or such if you cannot get to the phyiscal machine ) the operation of illegal websites ( which by the way almost every country of the world is already doing ) is not exactly censorship according to my understanding of the word.

It's not an easy project if you are going to do it with our current policies regarding personal integrity. The chance is also great that you will block the wrong DNS.

As for doing it in practice it is quite easy, you have a group of people who work on this globally ( this is how it works now by the way ) they get reports, the website with the most reports get priority to be first on their queue they confirm the illegal content, and have an automated shutdown process in place done by a machine. ( If they manage to get a hold of money earned by the illegal website it should go to this group and be used to keep fighting IMHO but that is another discussion )

What makes it complicated is when the owners behind the website has resources knowledge and money ( like TPB ) they can make it availaible again within 24 hours. Still if you keep shutting them, you are hurting them financially and making them work really hard just to stay alive. Besides if this law is global they cannot use loop holes such as hosting in a country where the laws are less strict.

TPB is a bit different than selling organs or distributing childporn though since it's a strictly digital practice. In the latter cases it's mere about distributing illegal content via the available communication technology.

I don't think it is that hard, and as I said they are already doing it, the swedish police have a website which they replace illegal websites with saying "This website has been shutdown because of <illegal acrivity> and if you know anything about this activity please contact the police with advice on this <adress>" it is done togheter with volunteer organization.

All you need to do is ( This has nothing to do with personaly integrity as you have not violated any of it in any of the steps )
1. Confirm the illegal content.
2. Trace the adress/host/etc ( not hard to do with a program ussually )
3. Shutdown said website. ( If possible )
4. If DNS blocks / others things becomes necesarry, you first contact the company in charge ( if they refuse to take down said website even after being presented with proof ) you shutdown their DNS service/IP range or whatever other more complicated measurements you want to take, and don't allow them back unless the content is gone.
5. Protest or other things to be treated in court.

Fine. It's only the focus on keeping the web "clean" I have a problem with.

In that case I don't have any problems with your opinions neither. To keep it completely clean is impossible and a waste of resources.

Just a recent article on how absurd the result of these kind of laws can be. How many times have you been sent to court for a joke? And this is in the birthcountry of liberalism.

It happens all too often where folks get all up in arms over a hoax or a lie. But yeah, it is still sad - sometimes folks lives get ruined over that stuff.

A webring administrator got into jail here because one of the users in on of the webring's sites posted a "libel"...

Thing is that you can not be a judge without basic knowledge of networking otherwise decisions will be absurd .
