Shutdown project is good. Wild Dogs have their parade. If everything goes well, I shouldn't be more than an hour late.

A no-brainer are elemental damage resistance shrines. These can be bought regardless, I assume.

Because everybody needs that.

But we still should coordinate, I believe.

I respecced WF pally build. Had to get adamantine body at level 1 and get 2 fighter levels for enough feats. Then I could build up the THF feat tree for glancing blows.

Will respec to this when I get back from my trip to my parents.

Any time I read "Pally" something inside of me wants to read "Pale Master".
I really have to unlearn that.

What a jerk !

I joined an Catacombs quest chain - the LFM sayd BYOH and "know the quest".

It did not explicitely state "zerging", although I soon found out that the above seemingly was meant to mean it.

Much later someone joined, and within one later part died.
He wrote : "Sorry, had go to the door bell" or so, you know what I mean.

The leader's reaction was the following :

Leader : "What did I write in the LFM ?"
Leader : "BYOH and know the quest."

He booted the one who died after writing that into the chat window.

Upon my replay that a door bell didn't fit in either of both categories, be bluntly replied : "But death does."

What a jerk !

I'm much the same way, though I will join the occasional pug (less and less recently, but still occasionally). Try being a Cleric in a group with some abusive sociopaths who treat you as their personal servant.

Well, I must say that for about 80 % my PUGs have always been to a great deal friendly. This is the very first time I encounter such an elitist.

But I will try to get his name out and then put him on my "ignore" list.

There are a *lot* more of them visible in the forums. They belong to the forum population, wghich is in fact a massive "vocal minority". And they usually get a kick into their BEEEP by more sensible (and serious) folks in the forums, too.

But they are there. And LFMs containing certain key-words are to be avoided, I decied. Now I know why. BYOH and "know it" in combination is something I will avoid now.

And I will be rigid. If I put up an LFM stating "flower-sniffing" and "no zerging" (because these are the key words for "slow play"), then I'll boot anyone who zergs around there. I will be strict, I've decided.

I'm still angry over this behaviour. I later apologised at the booted player for this behaviour, but I never got any response.

I think that I might invite him for a catacombs quest chain with my arti within the next days. (My arti hasn't done it yet, if I remember correctly.)

Edit : Besides : My own border of tolerance is really high. It really is. Under that I'm acting like sheep, tolerating almost anything.
But once someone (or something) crosses this border I *really* get angry.

Edit 2 : One of the positive experiences yesterday was helping someone to learn how to use emotes. He (at least the char was a "he") was very friendly, a newbie, as it seemed to me, but very friendly and polite. It looked interesting to see a magician dance. ;) (He tried out several emotes after I had explained them to him.)

The problem with PUG's is that you never know what you will end up in. My experience is usually good, but I have some experiences where the group has disintegrated and quest failed.

My approach to PUG's is to just move on if a PUG turned out to be bad. It's not the end of the world. You might never play against those players again. Just accept it didn't work and the group wiped and try again with another group.

Usually I notice that PUG's can be demanding if you're in a elite group. On normal and hard you can almost solo the quest so you can get a victory despite having bad players in the group. On elite, however, you need a good cooperating group to complete. If I see the group is not up to the fight then I just move along until we get to the first hard fight. The group wipes there and the bad players then have a tendency to quit the group. Then the core is remaining so we could use it to form a new group.

Anyway, it's only a game, so I rarely get upset of players behaving badly. There and then you can feel you want to teleport the player to a very warm place, but as soon as you're in the next PUG you forget about the bad experience. So I would never stop PUG'ing just because I have had my share of bad groups.

I agree that the likelyhood of ending up in a bad group is higher if you see the group leader has a lot of demands of the players joining his group. I almost never join groups using BYOH (by your own hand) as a requisite. This usually means you are expected to solo the quest section you're given. They use this to spread the group to finish faster. Wizard King in the desert is such a quest. So zerging is inevitable in such groups. Unless you're a TR character with good gear you probably won't be able to be by your own hand without a healer nearby.

Some people type Picky in the LFM. I avoid such groups at all cost. This is usually the most used word by the elitist players. They want you to be a multi TR with epic gear before they accept you into the group. Usually you see this for raids on hard / elite or difficult quests on elite where the group still wants the bravery bonus. Be prepared to see … xxx has declined your request to join the group… if you try to join a picky group.

Know it is another warning word. If the group leader types this it means that if you don't know the quest very well then they will become angry at you. They will NOT explain what to do and they expect you to know what's required of you. If you fail to do that they will easily kick you out of the group. So joining a group with the flag Know it is usually not a good idea. Even if you know the quest pretty well (having done it before) they can still kick you out because you don't remember every detail.

Some groups have the word Farm or farming. In such groups you're expected to play the same quest over and over again for XP or run the same wilderness area over for rares and slayers. Quite often you see a lot of zerging in such groups because the ones farming know the quest so well. They want to rush to the end chest. If you're not familiar with the quest they will start complaining because you take too long to follow around or not know exactly what to do in an encounter.

90% of the time I join a PUG that wipes it's in an elite quest where the group leader was way too squishy to start a quest on elite. Some players are so focused on the bravery bonus that they just put everything on elite despite not being geared to play such a quest. Some quests are easy so you can succeed on elite, but some are very demanding.

It can therefore be a good idea to look in the My DDO and look up the player being the group leader and check his general stats and gear. If you see he seems to have a pretty decent build then it's easier to join that difficult elite quest. You know the group leader has done the quest before.

I've joined elite quests like VON 3 at level seeing that all the others were players with HP below 200. I ask them if they know what to do and the reply I got it's their first time. So I ask if they have anarchic or chaotic weapons for the Marut they reply, what's a Marut? Or I ask if they have deathblock against the beholders and get no as a reply. In such situations it's probably smarter to say up front that this group won't make it and wish them good luck while you're leaving.

The main thing about playing in groups is to have respect for each other. In bad PUG groups you usually see the lack of respect of others as the main issue with the group.

Elitists make the big mistake of not respecting others who aren't as well geared as themselves and don't know every detail of a quest. They were newbies themselves a long time ago and have forgotten about it.

Some players just ignore instructions by the group leader and move around by themselves as if they were alone. That often leads to grief because such players die early or wake up monsters at the wrong time so the entire group gets into trouble. They might even start a boss fight too early making it impossible to complete the quest. If you're playing with such players it's usually best to just let them die and pick up their soul stones. As long as they're dead they can't do too much damage. :p Drop the soul stone off at a resurrection shrine and move on as if they didn't exist in the group.

Players have strengths and weaknesses and you quickly learn about these. Especially within a guild, but also in a PUG. E. g. we know that Corwin tends to get lost in dungeons so we therefore can't try to rush through an area. We have to wait for him. When we do things go better.

So adapting to the players you're with is necessary to have fun and succeed with the quest. Fortunately most players are quite nice and try to do their best in the group.

BYOH (by your own hand)

I have learned that there are several different interpretations of what BYOH means - the I think (although I'm not sure about that) most commonly accepted interpretation is "bring your own healing", sort of.

This "by your own hand" is new to me.

In DDO Terms, BYOH is Bring your own Healing. You are expected to be able to keep yourself alive, through whatever means, throughout the entire quest.

Quite often, this is done to attract Cleric and Favored Soul players into joining. There is a small minority that plays those two classes, and a minority of those who will pug.

Know it means the leader will be zerging, and won't stop to let others catch up. Most of the time, this actually means the leader needs a guide, but is too arrogant to admit it.

Picky means the party leader is incompetent, and needs someone to carry them through the quest. Very rarely does a quest require any particular class or build. On my Cleric and Favored Soul, I often would get /tells asking me to come heal this group or that group. If I was up to it, I would check the LFM and see what they had posted. If I saw picky, I would respond with "You're too picky for me".

By Your Own Hand and Bring Your Own Healing actually means the same. When you're required to bring your own healing it means you can't expect help from others. So you're on your own.

You usually see BYOH in wilderness LFM's. Then you're supposed to play as if you were alone. In wilderness areas it means each player fights in different areas to get kills faster and find rares faster. When the area is searched the players pick up the chests left behind by the rares (unless you killed the rare). Since you obviously will get injured you need to be able to heal yourself using pots, scrolls or wands unless you have healing spells.

I rarely see BYOH groups cooperating in fights like having a full group without a healer following each other. If there is some cooperation it's like 2 players fighting together in 3 separate groups to increase the survivability a bit.

Ah, thank you for your explanations. This fits in with my own observations, too.

Today I did mostof the Sharn quests with someone from the UK. Was a friendly person.

However, in the Binder's Rescue quest, we failed a lot of times because the first Binder we met desparately wanted and tried to fight the Sharn Syndicate members there ! And thus died too often ...
That was unknown to me. I didn't see this behaviour prior to Update 14/MOTU. Even on "normal" difficulty which we did.

After too many of these failures I switched to my Arti to take out these BEEEP traps, at least.
My Artificer was able to disarm traps through the restof the quest chain, by the way, except one where the Fresco had to be stolen back.
But all in all everything was a success, and after the Chain I quit. Too tired.

The Binder family have always been fighters. lol You just have to grab the agro from the one they are fighting as soon as you can, or take that Npc out fast enough to save the Binder family member. Hard to do at times, I think it depends on totally clearing the outside halls first so none can come in and join the fight. Also if you set off the traps the fighting in the rooms you are trying to reach starts sooner. Best to just get a rogue to disarm for that quest IMHO.

Well, my Artificer managed to disarm all of them - but that was on normal difficulty.

I failed on "hard" difficulty on the other quest, however, where one had to get the stolen Fresco back (Quest giver is Kear).
