What's going on with Antharion?

I will no longer support any endeavors on KS.

I read lines like this and feel like we're staring into the abyss. Without your funding, all such endeavors are doomed to failure. It's the end of everything. Woe is us...

I got an update about this game today, but no mention of the timeframes that they covered in a prior one. The one I received today talked about what skills will be in the release and how they will basically function.

I don't see what the big deal is. I'd rather they take the time they need and release a solid product. Its old school, not like the tech is going to be suddenly outdated. And yes I'm a backer.

People don't like waiting for things they want, especially if they pre-paid for them. If I told you I was going to bake you a really amazing pie and give it to you next week and then you ask me about it a couple weeks later and I say "Nah, I still haven't gotten all the ingredients together just yet.", you'd probably be pissed off.

Of course, that analogy sucks, because making an CRPG is 10,000 times more complicated than baking a pie, so it should be more understandable that it can take much longer than initially expected, and people should realize that pledging on Kickstarter isn't the same thing as a pre-order (which is usually offered only a few months before a release, not a year or more).. but no one likes deferring gratification. And to be fair, there have been a few KS games that have been officially canceled, seemingly abandoned, or even scams from the very beginning, so people are becoming increasingly skeptical of crowd-funding.

I guess the question to ask is, is there reason to believe the developer deliberately lied about how much work was left to do in order to get more pledges? These days I expect KS games to be delayed, but I find delays in KS far more frustrating when the developer stops doing regular updates. At least it looks like Antharion's dev has been good about doing them once a month so that is to his credit. I've backed a few KS projects that have been going 3+ months without an update.

In the past 40 yrs of my life and seeing how people work in real life, it doesn't surprise me at all that most projects are delayed these days. There really isn't much of a work ethic around anymore, except for what work can do for you. I'm more amazed when projects come in on a reasonable time, to be honest. Shocked even.

In the case of Antharion, the developer has made steady updates on Kickstarter showing the latest features he's implemented, and does show that he has made steady progress. It obviously is a lot for a few young guys, but they seem to have the means to materialize what they want to do.

That sure is the problem with Kickstarter though, in order to generate a frenzy you need to make it look like the game will be available very soon.

I pm'd the Antharion guy months ago and he said he is aiming for a December 2014 release. Keep in mind this was the plan many months ago, early summer or something.

I am really looking forward to this game, but the delay is killing me.

They probably are, but it's the same as in Avernum, which Antharion is inspired by.

It looks like it will probably be better than Jeff Vogel's last games, such as the underwhelming Avadon.

@HHR or anyone, is there any more news on this?

This game would have been out ages ago if he hadn't decided to add more area's which I think turned out to be much more work than he thought. I wish he would have just bundled it into an expansion pack (DLC) or quietly made it into a sequel (Antharion II)

Still holding out hope it is released soon!

Hey everyone, we're thrilled to report that the end is near. While we're running just a little bit behind from our previous December release target, we're not too far off. Currently we're scheduled to release the alpha by around the end of January, followed by the beta a month later, followed shortly thereafter by the official release.
As for the state of development we're pretty close to done. We're finishing the last few teaks and technical fixes before going into the Alpha phase. While we've made tons of changes, upgrades and improvements to just about every aspect of the game over the course of the last six months, I'll mention just a couple tangible ones here. Food - we've decided to make food an important (but not the the point of frustration) gameplay element. Sleeping (which restores your party's health and mana), now has a discrete food cost, 1 food item per hour, where each hour will restore something like 25 health and mana points. Each additional hour of sleep beyond the point at which your party's stats are fully restored is free, costing no food. Antharion has a world map with discoverable cities that allow for fast travel. We've added a food cost for fast traveling, where the cost is determined by your party's in-game distance from the city you're trying to travel to. Then there are inns in which you can rent and sleep in beds, fully restoring your party's stats for a fee considerably cheaper than the cost of food needed to do so when sleeping anywhere other than an inn. We also added a foraging skill, that'll allow you to find more and better kinds of loot in many situations. Foraging does not affect all loot, it's kind of supplemental to our looting system and has just enough of an effect to justify it as a skill pick.
Another focus of our efforts has been in balancing our huge open world which is divided into areas of overlapping difficulties. What this means is that from the moment you enter the game you can basically go anywhere and you won't find any level 20 goblin roadblocks. This design facet is crucial because of Antharion's open character development and skill system coupled with the total lack of monster scaling. Whether your party is super-powerful or not should make no difference because you as the player will have the option to selected the area(s) of difficulty that you find appropriate and fun.
I'd venture to say that, for those of you who've partaken in other alphas, you'll likely find Antharion to be relatively finished, balanced, polished and un-buggy. I say this simply to reiterate the point that much of what we've been doing has been attending to the seemingly countless minute details that require attention when preparing something of Antharion's scale and scope for public release. A big part of our design philosophy is that details count. Sure any given little detail on it's own may not look like much, but when you throw it together with 1000 other little touches something magic happens, hopefully anyways! The point being that we're confident that all of our attention to detail will pay off in the form of a much more solid full-fledged well-balanced rpg.
Check out this very old-school looking rpg recently up on Steam Geenlight.
Anyone with outstanding backer rewards will be contacted in these coming weeks prior to the Alpha.
Thanks a lot to all of you for your continued patience and support and we look forward to working with those of you from our alpha/beta tiers very soon. And everyone have a Happy New Year!

This is why I no longer back kickstarters. They always miss dates, which I understand but it's not by weeks or months it's turning into years.

I'm getting older ( only 43 so not too old) and years are no longer a guarantee .( yes I know there not at any age but I notice my mortality more as I get older)

I just don't see any reason to tie up my money for years in games I may never see. I'll wait for release from now on.

I contributed $40 or something. I don't mind waiting myself. If the dev team feels they need more time why would anyone second guess that? That's how publishers behave, killing great teams and games. Have some patience already. This is a new Indy developer and sure they probably overcommitted but if anyone contributed not realizing that then who's to blame?

Did they end up releasing that alpha on time?

But with 22K funding over two years of development, what sort of a "team" can be working on this?

I'm not mad and I expected delays but we are going on 2 years past release date.

No, they posted in their comment a few days ago that it will be soon.

I'm not worried about this one at all…been pretty frequent in their updates….

Missed dates in the software world? This happens even without kickstarter.

Oh, never heard them say that avernum was the game they were inspired from.
