The Totally NEW Team Corwin Thread

Do you know the paladin enhancement that will increase the aggro?

I see you have a level 7 paladin. How high have you managed to get your stats and AC?

My paladin has: STR: 20, DEX: 14, CON: 14: WIS: 12: INT: 8, CHA: 18. All will be increased by 2 (except STR and CHA that only gets +1) when I get the +2 tomes at level 7. My AC at the moment is 34 and will increase to 36 with Bulwark of Good II at level 7.

Here are the build plan for my paladin. In addition will be the bonuses from items, but I don't know what I will get so I can't place them. So far I have a +4 heavy shield, +4 plate mail, +4 longsword and a few lesser items giving +1 or +2 to some stats.

Divine Anger or some such. I never have taken it, it's a clickie that increases aggro for a brief time.

Your AC is higher, but I haven't managed to find anything better than my +3 Full Plate, and I went THF instead of sword and board. My DPS is much higher that way (I carried an Acid Longsword +2 for a bit with a shield, and I took more damage because the mobs were surviving longer).

As to stats, I'll have to load up DDO to see. Same for enhancements, though I think I have a few points I haven't spent yet. I know I've taken every stat boosting enhancement.

BTW, I'm not banking on tomes. I won't spend the points on them until I have most, if not all, of the available content. So your stats will be higher than mine if your buying them. I'll only use them if I get a random drop, or some kind soul gives me one.

I reset my Cleric, since she's started to get hard to run at her level. Given that she was my first character, it was bound to be poorly made.

Both my characters work very well so you can look at how I built them. If you have a 28pt build instead of a 32pt build then you set 8 in dex instead of 12.

I think it's good for the paladin to be a wandering tank (highest possible AC) because he will often fight in groups and then the fighters and other friends will help killing the mobs as fast as possible. The paladin can maybe get the best AC of all characters and that means you can go for the bosses and other tough monsters to get aggro. You can survive being hit a lot and use lay on hands if you lose too much hp. This should give your companions an easier time.

The major weakness of paladins is that their super high armor won't protect against spells and traps. So you need to get resist energy spells cast upon you from clerics or rely upon potions. If I lose a lot of hitpoints in battles it's because of enemy spellcasters and not melee monsters.

I think that a THF paladin will be a pseudo fighter and then he will lose out on DPS because he won't have as many feats. If you select the right enhancements and feats your paladin can be a wall that always stands after combat. You seek out the toughest opponents and help the fighters take out the bosses. You won't inflict as much damage, but you can shield them and make sure they get rested up if they come under heavy fire. A paladin is probably the best off-tank there is.

Experts on DDO says your paladin needs to get to AC 55 for the top level quests. That is essential in order to survive the lethal battles there. In order to get to that number you need to prepare for it from the start.

At low level I use my cleric as a melee character to help the fighters, but I noticed that the quests on level 5-7 are different. My cleric won't last long in melee due to worse AC than e. g. the paladin. So instead I try to stand in the rear healing the fighters and paladins and buffing them before combat. I also replenish mana for the sorcerers. This way the cleric becomes more passive, but a lot more effective.

I think each character needs to define his major role in quests and build to be as good for that role as possible. Your paladin is built for a melee tank character and that means you need to continue that and select feats and enhancements so you can continue to deal a lot of damage. Your healing powers means you can survive longer than the fighters. Your better saves means you can withstand the enemy spellcasters more etc.

If you feel you've mis-built your character (cleric) you can always buy an item that allows you to re-select the feats, enhancements and stats. You keep your items and XP so it's a nice way to repair mistakes you made without starting over with a new character.

At level 5, with having vet bought, it's far cheaper and better to just start from "scratch". I can hit level 5 just running through the Harbor quests, which a level 4 Cleric can easily solo. My main issue was CON; I picked an Elf which has a CON penalty. I'd probably use a Dwarf for a CON bonus.

My Paladin was built with 28pt build, so she's not going to have as good stats if you used a 32pt build. Still, I took 1 feat, on a class that doesn't need a ton of feats to be effective, to enhance my DPS slightly. Going through the forums and in game, I very rarely see anyone but Clerics running sword-and-board.

At a glance, I see you took 2 feats to enhance your shield use, vs my single feat. Quite frankly, I'd have dropped a level or two on Fighter for a free feat and the Tower Shield Prof feat, rather than spending a Paladin feat on it. I do admit that I shouldn't have dropped a feat for Empower Healing, since I don't really have the spell points to support it. I took Toughness and THF at level 1, Weapon Focus: Slashing at 3, Empower Healing at 6. The last I'll try to change out eventually.

Later game, any fighter-type will start to fall behind, simply because casters in DnD rule. I've heard it said that AC is irrelevant late-game; 100% fortification is more important. As is saves and DPS. Even so, a Party will basically exist to support the Sorcerer's Firewalls and Cleric Blade Barriers, among other spells.

Also, most high AC builds I've seen involve levels of Monk. I can believe it, because I picked up Monk along with 32pt and Vet. She doesn't get hit on hard level, nor fail a save; save very very rarely. The highest AC build I've seen was a Monk/Cleric mix, which used Cleric buffs to pump up already insane AC. We're talking AC of 50+ without armor; and the only armor being Ring/Cloak of Prot and Bracers of Armor AC8. Since my Halfling Monk rests around 30, and I just started her up and don't have any decent equipment to speak of, I can see another 20AC before reaching 20.

I do recommend, if you like the game enough to start spending money, buy vet and 32 pt builds. You do lose out on some few useful things that way, but you get better weapons (Flaming) than you're likely to have by level 4 unless very lucky.

I don't like to multiclass because I want the level 20 enhancements as well. Multiclassing is something I don't like much with DnD. I could accept the dual classes of AD&D when you decided to be a fighter / thief or figther/ wizard from level 1 and divided your levels on these 2 classes. But the multiclassing you have now is not what I like. People multiclass just to get extra feats and skills and that's not what I like. I've always played single class characters. Did it in NWN and will do in DDO too. Besides that I think it would have been better to get a level or two as fighter to get extra feats.

Well, the point of multi-classing in DnD 3.x was to allow players the option of creating a broader array of character types. DDO nerfed this by not having actual PrCs, just base classes and enhancements that can somewhat emulate a PrC. You weren't particularly meant to just take 2 levels of Fighter for 2 free feats (plus the other feats that fighters get) but to qualify for a specific PrC. A Cleric/Mage could be effective because he could go into Mystic Theurge, etc...

In 2e, dual classing never made any sense whatsoever. You magically forgot everything you learned before hand, lost the ability to gain hit points, and then, when your current class' level exceeded the old one's you suddenly remember your earlier training and experiences? Only the shortest lived races could change their class? You magically were too stupid to keep improving yourself in your old class' skills? 2E was idiotic in a lot of things, and dual class mechanics were a huge part of it.

The 2e "multiclass" was restricted to non-humans only, made no sense, and since they had level limits to their classes based on race, made non-humans worthless except as thieves at high levels.

3.x multi-classing is just 2e's dual classing fixed. Nothing more, nothing less. All the idiocies that 2e had that any sane DM would Rule 0 out of existence (skill loss, hp gain halted, unable to continue leveling in old class) were gone. Along with tons of other junk that never made any sense, and restricted the system to beyond the point of being useless for creating unique characters.

As far as the capstones, not all of them are really worthwhile, compared to what you can get by multiclassing. But in anycase, you have to have a idea of what you want before hand. Otherwise, you end up with an unworkable mess.

BTW, the $50 point buy gets effectively double the mileage for points this weekend. Very very tempting, even though I really shouldn't. You'd be getting some 6900 points. Which could get several areas to play in, though I think most are going to be later game content for most of us already playing.

I has a flaming weapon. :) Someone in da harbor gave it to meh.

Ok, so I has good and bad news. GOOD news: I just got Corwin's 'care package' in da mail. BAD news: I have a different system setup than you do C so my stuffs didn't go into my doc folder. I did however find a turbine folder in my programs so I just stuffed the 'new' turbine folder in dere. After that I tried the game but noffin. I then tried to do the same thing to the DDO Unlimited file. Gosh darn they take FOREVER to unzip btw. Anyway, after the DDO file loaded I tried the game again. It's interesting the things that happen when you least expect it to. I was all worried about telling Corwin he watsed his efforts in downloading, zipping then sending me all the stuffs when the screen started playing a movie type thing I never saw before. I was kinna excited about it since I never saw it before. Then the game went back to the normal log-in thing and I knew I was doomed. So after a bit of praying, comp voodoo and my cat walking over the keyboard and totally screwing everything up I was able to put my password in and guess what? :)

That it has! Thank you VERY much for all the trouble to get me up and running, my friend! When I get to play with you all on Fridays (Of course you aren't playing THIS Friday. LOL. Figures.) I will be less naughty. If there's another fighter I will just try to follow their lead until I feel I have the hang of teamplay again.

That means you don't have the feat for or otherwise cannot use that item. So wands, exotic weapons, etc... Red border means you cannot use it period, while yellow means it'll have a -4 penalty to use (weapons) additional penalties (armor) or require a UMD check (wands and scrolls).

Waterworks is a good harbor quest series for both XP and loot at the end. I think you can get some 4k XP from it. It's long though, very long.

Yeah, if you can get all the explorer points and rare encounters out there, as well as the two quests that are run out in the Cerulean Hills area, then you can get some decent XP as well. Sadly, you don't really see loot start to pick up until you get into the various houses; Marketplace free quests are alot like the Harbor in what they give out, though you can get a little luckier there. WW's is also an explorer area, though there's only 6 rares, and of them only two that anyone can reach; one needs a high INT score, another a high WIS score, and the remaining two need a good Search or the Detect Secret Doors spell.

Saw you online today T, but you must have missed me; I was only there briefly running my Rogue through Cerulean to get the basic kills and explorer XP. Found a rare too which helped. Most can be done solo, but some parts can be slightly more than a challenge for one!! :)

There's one rare situated in a cave that is seriously tough if you aren't ready for him. I went in there with my monk, backed by a Barbarian and Ranger. My monk was the only one who survived, and she had very low health. Granted, the Ranger was a level 2 one, I didn't know it until later. And the Barbarian wasn't very well played, not did it have a lot of hp for a barb (It's the same level as my Pally, and has about 40 less hp).
