In-case anyone hasn't heard of Areal it's a new game from some developers of the hit S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. After all the talk of the game being a scam it's now funded.

Anyway it seems we can thank the supposed Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Dear Eugene,

My daughter told me about your game called Areal, which is the spiritual successor to STALKER, and told me that she payed money to support your project on Kickstarter. I also love video games as well as shooters, and I like this idea. It’s important that our people do not shoot at each other, but instead, play games like this.

The first part of STALKER took place in Ukraine, and in the second game Areal, you put all events in the center of Russia – and if this is a war with mutants in a video game, then that is very interesting. I attentively familiarized myself with your idea and I really like it.

If you give me the chance to play the alpha version of the game, when it is ready, then I invite you in advance to the Kremlin, to meet personally, be ready to play a little bit and talk about the interests of young people, the gamers of our country.

Best regards,

[Signed]

V. Putin”
The developer also released two new videos this week.

So I leave it up to you guys. Is the game a scam, or does it have potential?

Maybe it's not a scam, but… I don't want copying something like this and selling it as an original IP.
No pledge from me.

More on the matter:

Yeah I've been following the drama, it's definitely a scam. How did this crap even get fully funded? It seems fishy to me considering it was stuck on £30,000 two days ago. The developers of this game also attacked Forbes and VG247 and they posted names of people in their comment section who have called their project a scam, calling them trolls in return:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1577656602/areal/posts/920631

They also claim to have received a letter from Putin (yeah, the Russian President, I'm not kidding!)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1577656602/areal/posts/919596

They're not just scamming, they're trolling.

Also note how their comment section is now overrun with suspicious accounts spamming the "troll" list that they complied in the first article I linked.

Well the project to me is a scam, and look likes it was suspended on kickstarter. Thank you Joxer. and Grangokhan for the links.

As we've said before, most sites who have written about us have been largely objective and fair, and report without bias and based on the information that they have. We feel that every journalist has a right to cover a subject from whatever viewpoint they possess.

We want to say to that we are sorry to the journalists of Forbes and VG247, that we had no right to criticize their work, and thank them for their criticism concerning our campaign and project, because that helps us to become better. With that said, we also firmly ask them hear us and take in our point of view, if not as their own, but at least as a possible alternative.

Sincerely,
Eugene Kim
So I guess we can safely say this is not how you run a kickstarter.:sweatdrop:

Yup Kickstarter suspended it. But it's not the end of it.

http://areal.west-games.com/

Our Kickstarter was suspended without any warning. As per Kickstarter's policy, we cannot contact them to find out why. Areal is the spiritual successor to STALKER, in terms of our vision for it and in terms of the team that we have (which includes Alexey Sytyanov, the lead game designer and screenwriter for STALKER). You can find out more about us and our team on our website: http://areal.west-games.com/
From the very beginning, we showed what we have accomplished, and showed the atmosphere for what we want to accomplish (https://www.youtube.com/watch…).

The fact is that there are a lot of companies that make their livelihood on STALKER, so when we showed up on the scene, they saw us as a threat and did everything that they could to stop us.

People also need to take into account that Ukrainians and Russians are in an information war right now, and as a Ukrainian developer, we were subject to constant hostility from Russian Kickstarter accounts (we even got death threats). There are over 16,000 comments on our Kickstarter, which is unprecedented for the amount of supporters that we have, and a lot of our comments are hate filled. Some sites, in light of this, chose to report based on sources from direct competitors or from the myriad of comments based on lies. Others chose a neutral ground, because of the confusing situation around us, and still others wrote positively about us. All in all, more than a 1,000 news results come up when you type in "Areal Kickstarter" on Google.

After vice news wrote an article about us, people started contributing every minute, but Kickstarter was afraid of the controversy surrounding our project, so they suspended funding. We set our base goal at 50K; even with 2 days left, we raised more than 64 thousand dollars, and our competitors were doing everything that they could to stop that. Kickstarter is a business, and that was their decision. We were not warned, we do not have a say in the matter, we cannot notify our backers, we cannot message our backers, and we can't post updates anymore. That is how Kickstarter chose to act.

We are the creators of STALKER, and we know that we can make Areal even better than that series, because of advances in technology, gameplay mechanics, and story. We need your support to make that happen, so we have opened up a website wherein we will continue to raise funds. We ask all supporters of Areal who read this, to please head over to our site and contribute there. PayPal is used for safe checkout, but you do not need a PayPal account to donate. Thank you for your understanding.
ROTFL
Didn't Putin promise to fund their game? According to them…
So what's with the new "donations"?

Just so you know, they're deleting any questions they don't like and ban users in case you're still interested. The question doesn't have to be something negative, just don't ask what's not answered already and give them the cash.

Even if the whole thing wasn't a scam, worse crowdfunding campaign I haven't seen yet.

So they can't find out why they got suspended… yet they know exactly why they got suspended??

Yeeeeah… I expect a new Ukrainian offensive to be starting soon where they bash the music in Divinity: Original Sin because the composer is Russian.

I'm not from Ukraine but I'll add to the "bashing".
New scores are not nearly as good as the rest of the game. And the problem is not the score but the arrangement of instruments. I'm not asking for pro orchestra in games soundtracks, but some of instruments used in D:OS OST just hurt an ear.

Just please check probably the best new score Drowning Hope, notes and chords just can't be better and still he added some yucky quasichoir and also something very ugly that is supposed to be a kind of pipeorgan or whatever keyboard with pumping system instrument.

What saves the day are very good scores from older Divinity games that are used again in D:OS.
In any case, this has nothing to do with composer being russian. I'd say this even if the composer was my brother.
