Hey Everyone, new member here. I recently patched the game with the latest patch the 1.6....I believe.

Things seemed fine, fired up the game tonight and kept getting this type of error posted a couple instances from the event log...thanks for any and all assistance in advance;

I just may have to give that a try. I am pretty certain I had gamed it for several hours after doing the incremental 1.6 patch. Not certain though, was almost 2weeks ago maybe.

I did upgrade the nvidia video driver, around the same time. (unistall, driver cleaner pro, driver install) Forceware 169.21, did neglect to rerun the directx install after that is recommended by some after the new driver. Rooting around in the game program folder found a dx9error.txt and contained several of these:
Description: Invalid call !
eCDX9Device::SetViewpor - m_p3DDevice->SetViewport failed: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL !

And these at the top:

eCDX9Texture::eCDX9Texture - m_p3DDevice->CreateTexture failed: E_OUTOFMEMORY !
Description: Ran out of memory !
eCDX9Texture::eCDX9Texture - m_p3DDevice->CreateTexture failed: E_OUTOFMEMORY !
Description: Ran out of memory !
eCDX9Texture::eCDX9Texture - m_p3DDevice->CreateTexture failed: E_OUTOFMEMORY !
Description: Ran out of memory !
eCDX9Device::ToggleNewMode - m_p3DDevice->Reset failed: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL !

date Modified 4/3/2008 so something there prob points to the exact issue...to those who understand things under the hood so to speak. I don't know if this is a running log or is replaced each session.

Really just fired it up last night as was in the optical tray, found the specs on this Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u I picked up last year for 50 bucks, just wanted to scope the higher resolutions it supports vs the 1280x1024@85Hz been running at.

Now I am overclocked, but never was an issue for Gothic 3, so don't think is behind this recent spate of crashing.

Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe/AMD FX-60@ 3Ghz via multiplier x 250 MHz FSB : Mushkin Redline PC 4000 1024x2, so not overclocked on the FSB which sems where G3 has issues, single 8800 Ultra (second 2b added in a few days) @ 656/1657/1123 or superclocked version speeds.... dedicatedfat32 4kb cluster page/swap file at the beginning of another drive (Master on the primary ide channel, boot drive is a SATA 2) and till last night G3 was running fine.

Will be a couple days or so before I can sit down and mess with it, maybe the additional info from the game itself may point to something. Previous session no crashing and last nights in the shy deer quest area...

Thanks for the help Bartacus, though if I have to reinstall the game, will try the full 1.6 patch on a virgin G3 install first, maybe the incremental wonked something, then fall back to 1.5 if things are not corrected. I really do hope there is a solution other than the old uninstall/reinstall/patch/test...routine heh.

Welcome to our forum!

Did you set the texture resolution to max? Lower it to medium to make it demand less memory.
Also disable AA & AF. I´m not up-to-date, but G3 didn´t really support one or the other. You can experiment with it when the game is stable again.
If you still get the DX error you should kill DirectX and install the latest version. MS silently updates it every few weeks.

It is possible that your problems were introduced with patch 1.6. The Gothic 4 developer cleaned up a lot of rubbish left over by PB, including implementing a new memory management system. Your PC might have one of the random configurations which don´t like this.

With disabling AA&AF do mean in the game controls? Or at driver level in my case the nvidia control panel (man I dislike the new one).

I did neglect to rerun the directx end user runtime installation when I updated ( I always use driver cleaner pro to insure old driver remnants are not messing with the new driver) I thought I was interpreting a portion of that error txt file correctly as a directx problem, thank you for confirming. I will check MS and obtain the latest package if one is available, if not will just rerun the one I have and see if it clears up that error at least. (Have the latest March 2008)

I do run high textures but have been doing so all along and no issues other than the typical crashes every once in a great while.

Think my go will be to reinstall the game and run the latest patch, I had done the incremental patch to update ftrom patch 1.5, perhaps the issue lay there, not tweak the ini aside from forget which was but the 100000 (0 missing)...initially, would be nice to find tweaks geared to my system specs....don't think am limited by the gpu, and will be running sli'd 8800 Ultra Superclocked 768mb in a few days just witing for the second card to arrive.

Thank you everyone for the assistance

In game. AFAIR it doesn´t work correctly.

Okay, then that´s probably not the main issue.

Yes, reinstall. It´s often the solution for strange problems. ;)

If you need further input you should probably also post in the JoWooD forum and at WoG. Triples your chances.
