Hardcore Gamer reviewed Sword Coast Legends and feel it is a 4 out of 5 game.

Sword Coast Legends is a solid loot crawl with more options than most games of its kind. It may not be the Dungeons & Dragons simulator many were hoping for, but it works well as just a straight video game. There are some hiccups, mainly in the graphics, optimization and customization departments, but its host of modes, delightful story, clever writing and the ability to play player-run and -created campaigns solo or with others, on top of having a creation suite for those who want to play the part of dungeon master, all make for a content-rich experience. The combat and overall gameplay mechanics can prove a bit shallow at times, never offering the depth or tactical veracity of Pillars of Eternity, but as a hybrid of Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, Sword Coast Legends is a game that mostly excels in all that it tries to do. Post-release will be an interesting time, though, as the limited and sometimes restrictive options are opened up and iterated on by N-Space. Until that time comes, however, it’s a good game with the capacity to be great.
Thanks Eye.

As we know from before, this site/guy is anything other than hardcore. As our Joxer noticed long time ago, most of his site are games for phones.

I think this will turn out to be pretty good once time has gone by and quality player made modules start to pop up. I'll look at it again after I finish up Fallout 4, whenever that is.

It cannot have quality player made modules when the campaign tools are crap CEO made for his 8 year old kid (he said so, that if his 8 year old can make them in it, he considers it a success).

It depends entirely on how you interpret the term Hardcore. In it's most casual sense the term hardcore gamer just refers to someone who constantly games. They could be playing bejeweled all day every day, in which case they're considered pretty darn hardcore by other bejeweled players.

Another term for Hardcore might just mean that they play all games with a no-deaths rule and attempt all games on the hardest settings.

Your meaning of hardcore means that they will only play games that you personally deem hardcore, which is the silliest definition of hardcore possible… even if some people round here understand your meaning, not because the words have meaning by themselves but because they have experience of how you apply the word.

Which is probably why you're style of posting is more apt to the codex than here, there are lots of people there who've self-invented their own definitions for things rather than accept a genuinely open group dynamic where words tend to mean generally what most people think they mean.

You caught me. I post on both sites.

And it is well known what hardcore really means with real gamers. Even FPS crowd would not consider phone games hardcore even if you spent all day playing them.

How big was that self-aggrandising generalisation of a genuinely minority/incorrect opinion:

<--------------------------------------THIS BIG------------------------------------------->

You can't just invent new meanings for words and claim they are right, you know, at least not in mixed company… in the codex echo-chambre, sure, call a cow a pig and have everyone agree with you, but in mixed company, you're the jackass…

Lol you are also sharing your opinion, you got zero backing for anything you said, especially calling anything minor. Look in the mirror first.

Excuse me? What have I said to defend the site? Just because I'm attacking your juvenile, vomit-inducing, use of the English language does not mean I'm some kind of white knight or whatever other ludicrous phrase you've invented as a means to express someone who has a point to raise with you.

hmmm, hidden and I both post over there too, but I'm a watcher at heart. As far as hardcore, it is a meaningless word typically used by someone who feels the need to feel superior in some way. I'm a hardcore "blah" is a way of saying, "I'm better or more special than other people" and is a sign of mental illness or some other deficiency.

However, hardcore porn beats softcore every day but Tuesday :)

Back to the game, I will probably pick up Sword Coast Legends in a year or two. Why? I mostly want to wait to see what other people do with the mod tools. If it truly becomes the next NWN, it'll be worth every dime. I'm not sold yet, but hope to be someday.

I did and I'm sorry that I did. The game is a bug feast. On Linux one would be happy if it even runs. :D

Certainly feels like it was done by two separate teams. For instance the pathfinding on Linux looks something like this:

Should I laugh about the gif or feel sorry for N-Space?

I dated a flake once. Well, I'm not entirely sure I was dating them, they were such a complete flake. We probably arranged about 50 dates in our time together but actually went on maybe one or two, and that was probably because they were either desperate or just wanted to see 'the town' rather than me. A good training in the methods of flakes but a learning experience I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies.

What flakes were you referring to? The developers?

This was my original thought as well, but I'm afraid now after seeing more I won't even allow myself to hold out hope. The core character progression is lame and not DnD (at least for me as a DnD fan and someone who wanted the traditional character progression mechanics). I guess if you really don't care about the DnD element, maybe you can hold out hope for a fun Diablo-like multi-player dungeon crawler with a DM/editor tool. I was naively looking for something like Roll20 meets Baldurs Gate2.

I also think there is serious risk the minimum viable product they launched is so weak that they won't have enough commercial success to fund the additional features that would make the game interesting to the fan-made module community. The fan request list is a zillion miles long. I just don't have enough insight into the industry to know/guess how much money the devs are willing to invest in this post launch.

Here's another question. Didn't they invest a considerable amount of time and money in the console experience for this game? And can console users even build their own campaigns? I can't image building a campaign using an xbox. Is that a flaw in their strategy?

I think their main flaw was that they were trained by Bioware and thought that what they did was adequate for the market, completely unaware that when Bioware do it they do it with a 30 million promotional budget which buys them all those people who are happy to buy anything that's promoted at them. SCL is what Bioware would be if they released their games without a budget and not as Bioware.

The pcgamer review scores it 55 out of 100 calling it out on its simplistic mechanics and lack of innovation. Have to say I agree after watching a lets play of it. The quests are unimaginative and it really only has a d&d flavour with the combat being far too easy. Some may find it telling that it is due to be released for consoles soon. However thats not important; what is important is that the game design is weak.
