No its not true as EA issued a statement today.

Electronic Arts has found no security issues on Origin following reports on reddit from users claiming having been charged for games they did not purchase. PC Gamer has the follow-up from EA's investigations: "We found no indication at this point of a breach of our Origin account database," an EA rep explains. "Privacy and security of user account information are of the utmost importance to us. We encourage our players to use Origin user ID and passwords that are unique to their account, and to report any activity they feel may be unauthorized to EA customer support at help.ea.com."
The problem now is do you believe them?

"Unauthorised" purchases?
It's true - but in this case EA is not to blame. Partially.

It happens and happened Origin acc charges your card twice for the same game or "you" bought something you actually didn't.
Well, sorry, someone knows or hacked your Origin account password. And Origin won't stop that one from purchasing.
There is a certain "avoid Origin" software that needs you to enter your Origin account credentials. That's my suspect #1.

Why is EA partially to blame? Because it's superhard to cancel these financial transactions happened inside Origin once they're made.

Most likely scenario is the individual accounts got hacked but as Couchpotato mentions ea can't be trusted to tell the truth anyway.

Yeah it's probably a case of people using the same password for Origin as they do for a dozen other services - and either one of those smaller services was hacked or (more likely) some users fell victim to a phishing attack on an unrelated service or were otherwise compromised.

It sounds more likely that there is a big account stealing wave going on. Lots of emails being sent out with fake warnings that requires people to enter their login details or such. If there is money to be made, then people will try to make it by stealing accounts (same thing has happened with Steam, and all the major MMOs).
