What Game Should I Play Next?

I think I still have Ecco The Dolphin - the Pc version, of course ...
The bad thing is that it was developed for Windows 3.1, if I recall it correctly ...

Even though it's not on your list - Evil Islands, homeboy. Evil Islands.

Total War: Shogun 2. You can hardly go wrong with turn based startegy. Fable 3 just came out as well. It is however greatly inferior to the 1st one, still it's a passable way to pass time. But definately try out "Lost chapters".

On another note, you should try out some of the earlier titles in a few of the series you posted. Mainly: HoMM, NWN

Might as well necro this topic. Why create a new one for the same thing?

While playing Eleven Legacy, I am already thinking about what to play next (bad sign, I know)…

Since I played (to death) Skyrim before this, I need a change from fantasy. Preferably a futuristic setting.

These are the games on my pile I am considering (there are many fantasy titles that are off the list for now). I've never played any of these:
- X: Terran Conflict
- Mass Effect
- Homeworld
- Space Rangers 2 / Reboot
- Master of Orion 2 (I've played #1)
- Tie Fighter
- Alpha Protocol
- Metro 2033
- Deus Ex: Invisible War
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution - The Missing Link
- Doom Collector's Edition
- Full Spectrum Warrior
- Jagged Alliance
- Jagged Alliance 2
- Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games
- Portal
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat
- Hard Reset
- Sins of a Solar Empire
- Supreme Commander
- Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
- Geneforge 1-4 (I played #5)
- Bioshock 2
- Commandos 1+expansion, 2, and 3
- Hearts of Iron II
- Patrician III
- Splinter Cell and Chaos Theory
- Anachronox
- Assasin's Creed 2
- Batman: Arkam City
- Europa Universalis III
- Victoria
- Victoria 2
- Mech Commander
- System Shock 1 (played #2)

Man, WTF was I thinking buying all those? ;)

Any suggestions appreciated!

Wait a second... you've never played Doom?

What type of gameplay are you in the mood for right now? What about in terms of length?

Yeah I played the first 3 levels of the demo / download, and liked it. Bought the Collector's edition with the full intention of playing Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom, but then was distracted by roleplaying games. ;) I did play Doom 3 though.

Good question about mood. I definitely don't wan to play puzzle games. Elven Legacy seems to be designed for one or a couple paths of success. It's more of a trial and error til you find the right path / sequence. Not interested in any gameplay like that (for a while).

4 months of FPP playing Skyrim makes me gravitate away from any FPP game.

Yeah quite a range of game types there. If you want to stick with something RPG-ish I'd say Mass Effect. Been playing that recently and have been enjoying it. It fits my current sci-fi mood perfectly.

I've heard good things about Geneforge but haven't played those yet.

You know, I haven't really played a space sim or flying game before, so I am gravitating towards one of:

- X: Terran Conflict
- Homeworld
- Space Rangers 2 / Reboot
- Tie Fighter (but I don't want to mess with a joystick)

That's a much more manageable list. Again suggestions welcome. :)

If you want a space sim then forget about Homeworld or Space Rangers. Those are strategy games.

The "X" titles seem like a lot of fun from what I've managed to play of them. I have the entire series but have never had time to really delve into it. I've played more of the original 'X: Beyond the Frontier' than any of the sequels, and the atmosphere is superb.

The only drawback is the amount of time required to invest in those games. They're like Elder Scrolls in space.

Elder Scrolls in space! Yikes. ;) Seriously though it sounds like fun, but how about Tie Fighter then? Seems like the biggest deviation from my last 2 games. Is it fun without a joystick?

Never really played Tie Fighter to be honest. That game was released when I was just starting to transition to the PC as my primary gaming platform. I assume you would have to run it in DosBox though.

Yeah. I seem to have had a lot of success with DOSBox games lately, with a minimum of tweaking and setup effort, thanks to the config GG supplied with XCOM.

TIE fighter w/o a joystick = Forget it ;) . This is one of those games of the classic era that is actually quite a challenge the further you get into the campaign and some of the missions require quite a lot of skill and reflexes like when you need to escort transport ships and then intercept tiny proton torpedoes before they reach their target. It's edge of the seat kind of action with white knuckles as your grip on the joystick gets tighter and tighter while you can feel sweat forming on the stick and your forehead and you're praying on your knees that this was finally the last wave of enemies or the final waypoint.
I don't know if it's impossible but it would surely take LOTS of practice and retries to be able to finish some of the harder missions with mouse and keyboard or keyboard only.
To be honest if you don't want to or just can not play this game with a joystick for whatever reason then it may be time to move on to some other game because these games were primarily made for people who enjoy the white knuckle joystick action.

Homeworld is imho just great, but very, very difficult to mater in terms of handling ! If you start it - play the learning session at least 3 times through ! - At least if you haven't played it ever before.

TIE Fighter is also great (very good story/plot !), but requires a little bit of practise, too. Thank God the designers/developers made the first missions so that you get into the game very slowly.
You could try X-Wing before that, just to learn the controls.
But TIEs have no shields, which means it will be considerably harder !

Edit : Heed the words of Moriendor ! ;)

I found myself in a similar predicament recently. I went with Mass Effect since the third one was just released. About two weeks later, and I just finished Mass Effect 2. It's a lot of fun.

I enjoyed the first one better. The story unfolded in a more exciting way for me. While some of the changes they made in the sequel were good (like removing the Mako in my opinion) they also made some strange changes from both a gameplay and story perspective. It was still quite enjoyable. Looking forward to the third entry, but I think I will go back and play some DLC for the second game first to make sure I don't miss story elements in the third.

Maybe I should pick up a cheap joystick somewhere. Wait… that didn't sound quite right.

Not sure if it's worth the trouble for one game.
TIE Fighter is worth it. Great game. Probably the best of all the SW 'flight sims'. - Well, not just probably: it is. Much better than the later games. Besides, it gives a really good impression of how it is like to fight for the Empire. Did I say 'great game' already?
