My drinking habits are similar to Benedicts, half a bottle of wine on saturday night and maybe a shot of whisky or two a month. This puts me well below the national average, but averages are pretty nonsensical when it comes to this sort of stuff as it usually is about 10-20% of the population that does most of the drinking both in absolute and "problem" terms
AFAIK its not the amount but they way finns drink that its the problem. They drink it all (as much as they can) in few sessions instead drinking smaller amouts over longer period of time. They dont know how to drink moderately. They either drink hard or dont drink drink at all.
Yep, and the British (where I think it largely is a class issue, Britain is more divided than many continental countries) are actually a bit like that too. From what I know both countries have far more drunkenness- and alcoholism related problems than France where the consumption is rather higher (but supposedly more spread out over the week).
What I meant as one unit is single bottle of beer 4,7% thats what the doctors use a unit measurement too. Ten such bottles have much more alcohol than single 75cl wine bottle imho.
Wine is typically at around 11-12%, so one bottle for two equals about 3 beers each. Certainly enough to be a shitty driver but not enough for a hangover….
I dont know about the mystical "units", but any stats here either counts pure alcohol or use "the equivalent of a 4cl schnapps" as a base, which is convenient as it roughly corresponds both to a (smallish) glass of wine and a bottle of beer.
Well, thank god we can still get drunk cheap over here and the evil socialists haven't taken our booze away yet.
30 EU for Jack is a bit steep(though I realize it qualifies as imported rotgut over there. Are there tariffs, etc, involved, btw?)
Not tariffs but a tax on alcohol content. I dont know the exact formula for computing the tax rate, but it affects the low end products more by driving up minimum prices. Any 40% hard liquor will cost 25-30 euros no matter the quality, and by simply moving up to the 35-40 range you get far better stuff.
The only range where imported beverages are markedly more expensive is beer, but then the imported brands tend to be niche products (Belgian monastic brews and whatnot) so they would have been expensive no matter what…
