Maybe you could begin with some examples of graphics novels you liked?

Ok the graphic novels I've read:

Watchmen (just amazing)

Homeland (Drizz' series)
The graphic novel was a better and shorter way for me to experience this series then reading the books.

Conan and the Frost Giants daughter (more interesting then I expected)

Magician's Apprentice (R. Feist)
A nice addition after having read the books as a teenager.

These I have and want to read soon:

Elric

Lankhmar

Ones on the list to purchase:

League of extraordinary gentlemen

Planetary Vol. 1 (Warren Ellis)

The Authority Vol. 1 (Warren Ellis)

The old Batman graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller is sensationally good. A dark, cynical 200 pages long powerhouse of a novel. It has nothing in common with classic Batman comics.

Watchmen is my favourite. Easy to read and understand.

Thre are quie a few Batman Graphic novles on many best of lists, and the one you describe seems like one of the best. I heard a lot of good things about "Hush" to.

The nice thing about "Watchmen" is that the story is accessible to non Comic book readers because there is no requirement to know a back history of the characters.

I used to be a huge comic book reader but stopped about 10 years ago, now if i want to read something I'll pick up the graphic novel. It's cheaper too.

Bone is highly recommended for younger readers, my 9 year old loves it.
