The ever-popular "Currently Listening" thread

I need to listen to Trick of the Tail again, too. BTW, all the organ work in Foxtrot reminds me of Yes from that period. Also, you really can hear the improvement in Collins drumming from Nursery Crime -> Foxtrot -> Selling England By the Pound -> Lamb.

@Pibbur You just need a fuse. :)

I love the music of Yes but can only take the high pitched vocals of Jon Anderson in small doses at a time

As far as Genesis, I think they survived the loss of Gabriel pretty well, but once Hackett left, it became very different band. I think Abacab was probably where I see the commercialism really start, and everything after that was radio pop for the most part. I still like the later Genesis stuff, but in a much different way

All this Genesis talk ... had me listening to another Phil Collins project - the band Brand X. I *love* their album 'Unorthodox Behaviour', which is straight up fusion.

Also sends me thinking about Bill Bruford (also a Yes tie in, since he drummed on 90% of the stuff they made that is worth listening to) ... he did fusion stuff in the late 70s with his 'One of a Kind' album ... Jeff Berlin on bass and Allan Holdsworth on guitar - stellar. :)

I also love the King Crimson incarnation with Bruford in the early 80s. :)

I'm listening to more Steven Wilson music this week. Here is one of his better tacks called "The Raven That Refused To Sing" it's both sad, and beautiful.

"The title track explores the story of "an old man at the end of his life who is waiting to die. He thinks back to a time in his childhood when he was incredibly close to his older sister. She was everything to him, and he was everything to her. Unfortunately, she died when they were both very young." The man becomes convinced that a raven, who visits the man's garden, is something of "a symbol or a manifestation of his sister. The thing is, his sister would sing to him whenever he was afraid or insecure, and it was a calming influence on him. In his ignorance, he decides that if he can get the raven to sing to him, it will be the final proof that this is, in fact, his sister who has come back to take him with her to the next life".

I love Steve Wilson's work in Porcupine Tree but haven't really listen to any of his other stuff. Any suggestions on what other stuff of his to listen to?

If you´re ever in a mood for some meandering minimalist-y ambient pop, you might want to check out No-Man: Together We´re Stranger (2003), a fifth album of a duo featuring Steven Wilson (+ guests).

When it comes to his recent three "solo" albums, I´d probably recommend the one named after the song Couch posted - it´s the tightest of the bunch and should be enjoyable if you like 70´s prog rock, particularly King Crimson or Yes.
He´s also releasing a new album in February and judging by some of the available snippets, for example here, it might be a keeper.

My favourite Steven Wilson solo album is Grace for Drowning, but they're all terrific. Additionally I would recommend Storm Corrosion, his collaboration with Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth. I seem to remember that SW regards these two albums along with Opeth's "Heritage" (which he co-produced) as a sort of "odd trilogy".

pibbur who wants a new Porcupine Tree album!!!

For post Gabriel / Hackett Genesis, I really like Duke. It was still pretty close to the departure of Hackett, but has alittle more commercial sound to it. I think its fantastic
