RPGWatch - Wave Of Darkness Interview

Sorry guys I kept you waiting. So here are the answers!

Are there (usually) more ways to solve quests? It seems you focus on open world and side quests. Does it mean it will have really simple main story or not?

Game story consists of 5 main chapters. Each of them has different number of quests and side quests. We hope it will be more than enough to engage players of all types.

Some quests are simple and are not neccessary for completion of the game. Other quests are not. Since world is pretty much completely open, you can find your own ways to solve quests. Sure, there are simple quests such as 'find what happened to that guy' or 'destroy the caravan that supplies the cultist forces' but the way you approach the solution is completely up to you.

Game is not designed to guide you in straight line from point A to point B. For example, previously mentioned quest where player has to destroy the supply caravan to help some rangers defending the city will be given by ranger leader. You can go in straight line from the ranger leader to the south where the caravan is but that will lead you through the area infested with various monsters.

Or you can go to the west and then south but that will lead you near the temple destroyed by elemental that went berserk when its master died. Or you can go to the east and then south, but that area is infested by zombies risen when cultist forces destroyed surrounding villages.

Or you can use the secret underground passage that leads you behind the enemy lines directly to the swamp south of the caravan. but then you will be isolated and far from help and also in the middle of the area filled with noorkas, which are snakelike creatures with bunch of ranged attacks.

This was example of what we are working with. Some quests have static way in which players can solve them (in this case 'find specified location(s) and destroy everything there) but since world is open, each player will approach this quest differently.

Also, there are some quests that have subquests (find X hidden items, activate Y switches in order to open passage in order to finish quest this way or that way etc.). We have tried to avoid 'standard' grinding quests (kill Z monsters of W type). There is enough killing in the game as it is.

Do you plan some non-combat activities or skills (aside from crafting)? Like social skills (in dialogues), puzzles in dungeons, gambling, alchemy… ?

Sure, there are puzzles and activation mechanisms and other brainstorming parts of the game.

Crafting is still here but is now upgraded. Now you can buy or find scrolls of crafting that describe items you wish to create. This gives us much flexibility so now you can craft regular items, magical weapons and armors, blessed items, charged items, empowered items and more. This works for all items types, you can cook food or make armors using armorsmithing or even craft necklaces and ring using jewels and jewelcrafting. Most of the items in the game can be crafted using some skill and/or resource.

Unlocking has also been upgraded. Now you can use keys in addition to rune unlocking. Note that keys are rarely dropped so you will have to decide when its good to use them.

Spells are also upgraded. Now each spell becomes stronger when you use it. This works similar to experience level player has. Each time you use the spell, its "experience" adds up until your spells gains level. Which makes sense, wizards casting fireballs become more experienced as the time passes by and they use the spell more often. Each spell now has more parameters all visible from the tooltips which are also heaviliy upgraded.

We have fishing as a new way to gather food which replenishes your health. players can fish only in designated areas but there more than enough of them scattered over the map. We have multiple types of fishes you can catch.

Legendary items are changed. There are 8 sets of legendary items scattered throughout the world. Collecting each set gives you different reward.

Relics are also added. Those are rare items you can find and you can use them to empower your other items. Its up to you to decide which way to combine the items and what is more important to you since each relic works only on some items and their properties.

When are we going to get some screenshots of this new stuff? When is KS campaign planned to start?
Will someone start to visit official forums on daily bases to clean up bot posts and answer people?
For LoD your frequency of communication was not good enough. I suggest you do that once your WoD KS campaign starts.
