Risen - Pack Shots

Pretty cool box shot. But, Piranha Bytes boxshots always remind me the Gladiator movie. It's not so hard to tell why. :)

Those screens were pretty sweet, i like the shot when he's climbing, so at least that is in (still disapointed that there's no swiming/diving).

I really like the graphics engine that Gothic1-2 used, this looks the same except for better character models / higher poly count. Some graphics engines makes the graphics look very, hmm, brittle almost (Divinity 2), while in the Gothic games everything looks so incredible SOLID, if someone understands what i mean lol

No swimming? I never heard that. I heard there would be no diving, but didn't hear anything about no swimming in Risen.

It says in this faq that there's no swimming or diving:

http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=535288&highlight=swimming

ridiculous that both arcania and risen seems to take place at sea on an island but you cant dive/swim, imo that should have been one of the essential parts of the game.. its like playing a game that takes place in a desert but you cant walk on sand, well ok not quite, but almost.

Why are they trying hard to make carbon copies of each others instead of doing something that the other game doesnt have, that'd be competitive at least. People ARE going to make comparisons between those two games.

Thats true, Lara Croft in Tomb Raider had no trouble diving and swimming against underwater currents, pulling levers and opening gates to find hidden areas. Risen, by its very nature of having temples with underground passages would be a perfect setting for water and swimming.

As someone else pointed out, it looks like the Alpha Prime box shot and I think it also looks a bit like the Divinity2 boxart (without dragon). But then it also looks like any other two dozen or so boxes from the past five years. It's all about young male power fantasies isn't it?

I can understand why they've chosen that image. I've just finished off Gothic3 (with the latest community patch) and enjoyed it alot and I'll be buying Risen on release and no doubt enjoying it as well. But it's just a pity RPG games (generally) can't get a bit more psychologically sophisticated than the usual cod scifi/Tolkien worlds where the only way to progress is to get a bigger gun/sword + more outlandish amour/spacesuit and kill more stuff.

It's a pity because these big games could really challenge our assumptions about how we view the world and what we consider the 'norm' without sacrificing fun. They could do that by (for example), portraying societies that work in radically different ways to our current western worldview. Given the kerfuffle in the US at the moment over 'socialism' (although they wouldn't recognize true socialism if it bit them in the arse), imagine a game which included a working socialist society? Or something modeled on the historical Sparta complete with its less 'heroic' bits which really challenged the player's morals? But instead we get nice, safe, uncontroversial medieval or sci fi worlds - with shopping.

There's a reason why games are not taken seriously within the larger sphere of artistic criticism and the Risen/AlphaPrime/Divinity2/etc.. packshots are emblematic of why. They fulfill a commercial imperative, but they're puerile.
