Risen 2 - Officially Announced!

Never played the first Gothic, but I don't get the love for Gothic 2. It had weird, twitchy controls and the whole experience felt jumpy and hard to control. It was kind of ugly also.

I've been into this before, but the controls were one of the best things about the Gothics for me! Although they're are bit hard on the fingers using a keyboard. That's why I mapped a gamepad to them. The cool thing about it was that you could do three different slices with your blade. You had to make certain combo's to get your enemies down. I believe that, as you advanced in skill, you even learned more combo's--even the combat started to feel smoother as you got better with a blade! The thing is, in Gothic, combat started out pretty awkward, because, well, you weren't very good with a sword yet. ;) At the end of the game, you'd be slicing through hordes of orcs!

The graphics weren't that bad for the time and it had its own distinctive style.

People complaining about the controls in the Gothic games needs to die :p I think most of the people complaining about the controls were people downloading a pirate copy, tried it for 5-10 minutes and decided it's crap (because it wasnt as easy as Diablo or whatever) and deleted it. Their loss..

No, the official manual was rubbish and the controls unintuitive. Apart from that I agree with Thaurin ;)

Gothic 3 is worth another try. The Community Patch fixes most problems.

I'm still playing GIII, still in Nordmar. Haven't actually played for a while, but my mage is too powerful and it feels like cheating, while when I tried playing as a warrior and that was too hard and it took too many trips back to fully enjoy it too.

Warrior wasn't hard, more tedious.

The manual? That thing that people never read when learning about controls? Right ;)

I got used to the controls rather quickly, but I can definitely see the majority not being comfortable.

They were needlessly unusual, and it was a stupid design decision, pure and simple.

That said, people who dumped the game based on controls - were definitely missing out.

The controlls for opening/handeling the inventory was bad (took a while to get used to, i can agree to that), but the combat controlls i really liked, innovative and most of all, they made the combat really fun and not just tedious (which is often the case in RPG's).

Oh, the controls were quite good - once you got used to them.

The problem was that they didn't use standard keyboard layout, and they didn't have a good tutorial for the control scheme.

The combat system in Gothic 1/2 is pretty damn good, but that has less to do with the actual keys pressed, than the concept of letting the player succeed with good timing of attacks - whilst having a steep but fair learning curve. Surprisingly few games implement that successfully.

They also managed to fuck that up completely for Gothic 3.

They made small changes/improvements between Gothic 1 and 2. In Gothic 2, the controls are smooth in my opinion, even looting/trading/etc. You can do it so fast once you get the hang of it.

Yup, they wised up for the sequel.

IIRC they gave you the option of "Gothic 1 layout" and "Standard controls". Definitely an improvement, and I think that's part of why the second game is so popular, when the first one is less recognised.

I personally preferred the first one.

I'm playing Risen right now, seems quite good, the graphics is very nice except for the faces. Is the game smaller than G2 (without expansion)?

The map is roughly the same size I'd say, perhaps a bit smaller. The game itself takes less time though, mainly because you don't revisit areas as frequently as in G2 (lots of running back and forth there).

Wanted to buy it in a shop close too home, but nowhere to be found anymore :(

and the boss fight reminded me of Duke Nukem 1.

Oh, nice, someone actually remembers that game ? ;)
So I know now what to expect from Risen (haven't bought it yet) ;)

From a future PB press release:

"We spent a ton of time researching what players want, and they simply want cool stuff to happen all the time, and they don't like to think!"

"We removed the faction system, because we found - based on feedback - that players don't really want to make such a decision. It simply gets in the way of the FUN stuff. So, you don't have to worry about any of that stuff anymore."

"We really like to stay in touch with the modern gamer, and so we've tried to figure out how to make the best combat system in the world. What we've found, again - based on extensive research - is that the annoying and complicated RPG stuff - is just not helping the game be FUN. So, now you simply pick up a weapon, og you cast a really cool spell - and you can just… DO IT! You don't have to worry about skills or abilities. That was really never much fun, when you think about it!"

"We really feel that Risen 2: Rise of the Awesome - is our best game yet. I mean, we've made some really cool games - but this one, and I promise you this from the bottom of my heart, is THE best game we could ever make. It's almost like a dream come true for us, here at PB!"

How could it be a joke? It's from the future, and the future is not a joke.

If game design needs to be dumbed down because the average gamer doesn't want to think then i would say the future is a joke. and those of us that like the factions and choices and all those good things that make an rpg an rpg have to suffer the same commercialism that destroys creativity. It's happened in Hollywood, it's happened in the Music industry and now it's happening in Gaming.

Perhaps i'll just get a frontal labotomy and join the masses.
