What I've Been Watching: The Catch-All Film Thread

Just saw Godzilla. I liked it. The monsters were huge, Godzilla was true to the name, and the story was interesting enough. The monsters fighting was a great part and the graphics and set design were amazing.

I'd give it a solid 8/10. Not the best movie I've ever seen, but really cool.

What a day, and im not done yet:
Machete Kills - big dumb fun, not as good as the original
Fido - hilarious zombie comedy about a boy and his zombie, wuite heartwarming and highly recommended
Almost Human - Great indie alien bodysnatchers horror, i liked it

But the prize today definitely goes to Irreversible. Loved it. Very rarely does a movie unsettle me, on a few levels this one did. Brutal and disorienting, it was dare i say a masterful film that im goimg to keep in my list for a while. Caution:this is not a "revenge flick" date film.

I finally watched The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

I thought the first movie was pretty bad, but that was nothing compared to the abomination that TDoS is. Every 5 minutes I found myself thinking "Wait, I don't recall that happening in the book".. "oh… it's because that never happened".

Just a terrible movie from start to finish and a total insult to the source material.

I'm on my second watch-through of Downton Abbey. I have no idea why. Maybe it's the period-piece setting, maybe it's how accurate it is, maybe it's how colorful it is. I dunno. But I actually really like it, and that surprises me.

Or maybe I love Dame Maggie Smith's character more than is healthy. And Michelle Dockery is hot. Really hot.

I just watched the Samurai Cop 2 Kickstarter video. Hilarious. All the women they've shown so far to star in the movie are porn-stars. Hilarious. I personally have not seen the original movie, but it's garnered a lot of attention lately as one of those so bad-it's good movies. But if I do plan to see it, I'll probably see The Room first. ("Lisa you're tearing me apart.", "Oh, hi Mark. How's your sex life")

Here's some funny coverage of samurai cop:

Funny stuff.

Captain america: winter soldier. If you want action I prefer this kind of movie above pacific rim. I like big machines, just not robots. Hmm, I start sounding like a broken record

Also watched Godzilla. Enjoyed it, but don't know what to think of it further.

Just came back from Sin City 2. It was pretty cool. Very very stylish. The stories were ok. However it did feel a bit like more of the same. So I don't know if I liked the first one as much as I did because of the novelty of the film style, or if it really did something good. But it was good. I definitely never felt bored during it, as I read some reviews did. It was a cool ride. And the A Dame to Kill For segment was actually pretty cool. Most reviewers seemed to dismiss it very fast. I liked Eva Green a lot. But I think the best guy was the main antagonist, Roark. Powers Boothe was just great.

Brolin was also good as Dwight. Mickey Rourke was good as always. Joseph Gorgon Levitt was also good. All around good performances by all. But maybe the style of the acting helped a lot.

My thoughts exactly.
And then I watched "Enter the void" and was forced to re-evaluate my love for Noe.

Guardians of the Galaxy is the most fun I have ever had in a movie theater. Even better then when I had sex back in the day at a theater :)

More fun then Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, or Lord of the Rings. What a movie of pure enjoyment. Made me feel like I was 12 again and I am older then dirt.
No kidding. I got a muscle ache in my cheeks because I was grinning the whole time!

Now, to be a better movie in the long run, it probably would have had to have more drama and more .. depth, so I'm not sure if it will stay in my memory like say, The Fifth Element. But still — it was one big, uplifting feast and exciting throughout.

Watched the first Sin City again, with a couple of friend who've never seen it, in preparation to see the second one (yeah my second time). Every bit as good as I remembered it, and I caught some new things that were referenced from the second movie. Pretty cool stuff.

But I was surprised my friends didn't really take to it. They missed some plot points, and felt the movie was too hard to follow. I personally didn't feel that at all when I first saw it. I was practically glued to the screen. Anyways, tastes can't be argued I guess.

So, I caught Fury at the theater. It was… ok. It kept meandering in what kind of story it was supposed to be telling, trying too hard to be PC in certain parts and going full-out KILL,KILL,KILL in others. Certainly better than many other movies but a Das Boot it was not.

The fights were fairly riveting much of the time but I wish they had not chosen Star Wars blue/red tracer round FX. Perhaps some military vets can speak up about the veracity of this, but I for one thought Luke Skywalker was going to pop out of the hatch when those effects first showed up.

Most notably, there was one scene at the very end of the movie that had me rolling my eyes at its absurdity. Completely soured the ending for me.

Late yesterday night, I was bored - so I started browsing Netflix and, for once, I found something I wanted to check out:

Stand Up Guys

Ok, so it's nothing special - but better than most of these tend to be. It was genuinely touching in a few places, and though it was saturated with clichés of the genre, it managed to do a few new things as well.

It's like a modern Tough Guys (the one with Lancaster and Douglas) - and it's around the same level of quality.

I'd say give it a shot if you're in that mood.

7/10

I would go with 6/10. The battle scenes were riveting, and with the exception of Logan Lerman I enjoyed everyone's performance. There were two scenes that wrecked it, the most egregious is in the spoiler tags.

After Wardaddy & Norman had a nice dinner with the two German women, showing the audience how the other side isn't always bad (yawn) and how the battle-hardened soldiers still have a human side (yawn again), the ensuing artillery strike and predictable death of Norman's concubine. O NOEZ! Teh horrorz of war!!11!! War is obviously horrible, but this was cheese. When you heard the shells you just knew what was going to happen and I audibly snickered.

It seems as though I have seen pictures from WW2 with soldiers wearing camoflage similar to what was in the film. As to whether they could be considered official ghille suits I don't know. According to Wikipedia they were first used in the Second Boer War so I expect it's a possibility.

This looks interesting -- got apparently inspired a lot by the Japanese classic, "Dark Water", which I got goosebumps from years later just thinking about the final scene ...

Otherwise I'm watching Michael Jackson's "Ghost" now (and Thriller, of course). =)
