Here is a new batch of reviews for the recently released ARG? Lichdom: Battlemage.

PC Gamer - 76/100

A beautiful and difficult action-RPG that rewards risk-taking—the complex magic system makes up for the bits that just aren’t worth playing over and over.
Gamingtrend - 80/100

Lichdom: Battlemage is a clever and exciting arcade style action-RPG, which can be a lot more fun than one might expect. The battles are challenging, the magic system is as diverse as advertised, and the play mechanics do a pretty good job pulling it all together. A few rough edges here and there, in combination with the game’s high requirements can lead to some embarrassing hiccups and broken moments, but it’s nothing that gets in the way of the overall experience.
Gameinformer - 8/10

Lichdom: Battlemage is an interesting and enjoyable take on first-person fantasy with lots of customization to dive into. I’m hoping this initial effort leads to an even more polished sequel for Xaviant down the line.
MMORPG.com - 7/10

Lichdom: Battlemage is a fun, if shortsighted RPG with some fantastic upsides. Is it worth the asking price of $40? I’d say no at this point, and hold out for a Steam sale. It’s definitely something fans of the old Hexen will enjoy, but fans of open ended RPGs will find Xaviant’s game lacking. A solid effort, but not quite what I’d hoped for after seeing the game at PAX East this year.
More information.

That lack of open-endedness mentioned in the last review was what scared me off in the end. Though I've never heard it compared with Hexen before, and that's got me intrigued a little, I admit.

I wonder how many of these reviewers are Heretic/Hexen fans or FPS fans in general.

But PC Gamer really shines: "A beautiful and difficult action-RPG that rewards risk-taking… complex magic system…"
I see that many sites consider action games often as ARPGs nowadays so they did the same for FPS with magic. But describe "magic with no mana and no cooldown" as complex (!) magic system sounds like media garbage of the week ("I got paid for every and any word").

Seems like a game for our local Hexen and action CRPG/Shooter fan, Jaz.

I thought I had missed (or completely forgot about ) something, then I read (PCGamer) that the game has a check point save system.

Still, the checkpoints can be tiring. As pretty-looking as most of Lichdom’s world is, there was more than one occasion where I grew tired of treading the same ground. Some checkpoints are placed remarkably close while others are separated by large mobs of enemies that, even when they pose no special danger, take many minutes to push through—more often than not, I just wanted to get on with it. Lichdom’s loot system is built around these checkpoints—the more checkpoints I can link together without dying the better the spell-crafting material I get—which is interesting, but when a tough mini boss has my number and the loot rarity level resets with every death, it becomes a grind that can’t be avoided.

And I'm out.

OMG

That's instantly no buy for me!
Not now, not ever. Unless I get UPS for free with the game.

Yeah, checkpoint saves are crap. I didn't know about that.

The Shadowrun community was in an uproar for, what, a year over the checkpoint save system in Shadowrun Returns? They finally changed it because of community outrage. And rightly so.
