Omega points out that Torchlight recently won Best Debut Game (I assume that means non-sequel or similar) at the Game Developers Choice Awards.

Maybe it means best first game by a developer, although that would narrow down the competition quite a bit.

There were hundreds of first games released by new developers last year. Runic games also has no other titles. Torchlight was their first release.
