A while back Something Awful forums did a personality type thread and it turned out that 2 of the 16 Myers-Briggs types were the majority of the readers, even though they were rare types in the general population. I've been curious about our readers here as well.

For the sake of experiment then,
1. List a personality type from a standard test (MBTI, DiSC, etc.)
2. What kind of games do you like
3. What kind of games do you dislike

A quick MBTI test is online here: http://www.kisa.ca/personality/ (The results matched a specialist-administered written version that I've taken). As a side note, I think a lot of personality tests are as helpful as a horoscope, but the MBTI is a really helpful model for people's preferences and interactions.

Ah, interesting. MBTI is often used and discussed in the HSP forum I'm in.

Sounds interesting. This is me:

Your personality type is ISFP.
Introverted (I) 93% Extraverted (E) 7%
Sensing (S) 59% Intuitive (N) 41%
Feeling (F) 70% Thinking (T) 30%
Perceiving (P) 59% Judging (J) 41%

The games I like best are strategy games that incorporate a "whole world" element, such as diplomatic options, and where the world seems alive with people, events and cultural identifiers. For example, I like Civlization over some grognard-type military theatre wargame. City builders and games where war isn't the only imperative are what I look for as well.
I also like RPGs that have a solid story, interesting individuals and open-ended options.
And, surprisingly, I like driving games, but the sorts with realistic damage and ones that go "off the beaten path" (eg using less than cutting-edge vehicles).

I dislike competetive PVP games, strictly confined wargames, on-rails action RPGs and "hobby" games like cards, hunting or whatever.

ENTP.

"ENTPs are usually verbally as well as cerebrally quick, and generally love to argue--both for its own sake, and to show off their often-impressive skills. They tend to have a perverse sense of humor as well, and enjoy playing devil's advocate. They sometimes confuse, even inadvertently hurt, those who don't understand or accept the concept of argument as a sport. "

That's clearly completely wrong.

Oh, and the games? What the ISFP said, if Carmageddon counts as a racing game.

ISFJ here, with a major 'F'.

I like:
- endless games (sandbox type CRPGs, puzzle games like Tetris)
- games with intriguing stories and/or a deep atmosphere (be they adventures, FPSes or CRPGs)
- fighting games
- CTF games (the latter two preferrably against bots - my competetive gaming years are over)
- gaming franchises set in original (as in 'not originated in other media') worlds.

I dislike:
- sports games
- games in High Fantasy settings (with Orcs, Elves and pointy-hatted wizards)
- railroaded arcade games (think of Rebel Assault)

Absolutely, and it's a great example of what I meant by "off the beaten path" (or, in Carmageddon's case I suppose the path is all about the beating) in a racing game. Something that alters the general formula of race and win.

ISFJ.
Introverted (I) 79% Extraverted (E) 21%
Sensing (S) 59% Intuitive (N) 41%
Feeling (F) 75% Thinking (T) 25%
Judging (J) 86% Perceiving (P) 14%

"Loosely translated, ISFJs like to keep their perceptions to themselves, and aren't sure enough that what they "see" as Introverted Sensors has any relevance to the outside world. Thus the perception, based on unworldly data, may not be true. The obedient Extraverted Feeling function must therefore refrain from strong statements expressing these opinions."

Or instantly apologize for them ;) Yes, these people are crazy.

Likes:

Turn-based strategy, action rpgs and combat intensive(especially tb) rpgs (HoMMs, Dominions3,IWD and ToEE)
Rpgs which create their own world and encourage you to be part of it.(Gothic, The Witcher, Arcanum)
City builders but not Sims
Fantasy based or pre-20th century settings as opposed to contemporary or Sci Fi settings
Puzzle games like Puzzle Quest, but usually not puzzles in games( as in M&M and NWN)

Dislikes:

Most non-linear and sandboxy rpgs where I become bogged down in what I should do next instead of excited about the fact I can do anything next. ;)
Sports games or highly competitive games judged by high scores
War games

Despite sharing the ISFJ label and a few preferences with Jaz, our tastes are almost diametrically opposite in some things though, so I question how accurate this test may be in determining game favorites by type.

We did a similar type thing over at http://www.adventuregamers.com

Interestingly nearly all of the persons who played adventuregamers were
Introverted iNtuitions Thinking Judging or Perceptions when a poll was taken:

http://adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21610
(N=23 at present)

This really didn't came as shock to me as most adventure games seem to be people that like to read books and to sit in front of their computers solving puzzles in adventure games in single player games. I'm a INFP or INFJ (mostly this) when I take the MBTI-test and I can relate to the info on these type(s) fairly well.

What's interesting, though is that while it seems that at least most adventure gamers are Introverts, game developers (and publishers) seem to ignore this fact, as they continue to make game for Extroverts (at least that how's I see it...).

Oh, and I like RPG games, action/adventures, and Adventure/puzzle games.

My, looks like I'm an extreme type of person... I used to be an INTJ, with the S/N being nearly 50/50; looks like I'm getting older and more rigid.

Your personality type is ISTJ.

Introverted (I) 100% Extraverted (E) 0%
Sensing (S) 77% Intuitive (N) 23%
Thinking (T) 100% Feeling (F) 0%
Judging (J) 77% Perceiving (P) 23%

Game-wise, I like games that give me time to consider my actions and maximize my performance.

Edit: By the way the test site also gives hints for a successful career - and I hate every job they sugest for ISFJs.

Most of the jobs I have had, or seriously considered, plus one of my lifelong avocations was on my list of suggested careers.

I also got my wife to take the test. She was a within a few percentage points from being one of the two personality types suggested as being most compatible with me -- missed one of the letters by a hair.

I have to say I'm impressed: the correspondence looked much stronger than random.

Your personality type is INFP.

Introverted (I) 93% Extraverted (E) 7%
Intuitive (N) 68% Sensing (S) 32%
Feeling (F) 80% Thinking (T) 20%
Perceiving (P) 95% Judging (J) 5%

"INFPs never seem to lose their sense of wonder. One might say they see life through rose-colored glasses. It's as though they live at the edge of a looking-glass world where mundane objects come to life, where flora and fauna take on near-human qualities."

Clearly that's at least as wrong as PJ's evaluation. :)

As for games, I haven't really thought about which types of games I like or dislike.. I do prefer atmosphere over everything else.

In general terms: I like shooters, classical adventures and of course RPGs. I dislike most of the rest. (That translates well to movie genres too: I like action, fantasy and sci-fi, while I don't care as much about the rest).

So far looks like Prime J is the only E amongst us.

@ fellow ISFJ bkreugar; I also dislike the professions named and have spent no time in any of them except clerical, which I loathed. Some of that other stuff is bunk for me too--my spouse was rolling about the part about not 'articulating any distress'--I am the whiner in the family and will notify the universe if I have a hangnail that's really bothering me. ;)

apparently, I'm a "duty fulfiller" type... that sounds dull and boring.

I like rpg with a good story and good npc interactions. Easy control settings also appeal to me. I also like some adventure and FPS as well. I like puzzle games.. esp tetris. I like some fighting games as well. I used to be addicted to street fighters.

I dislike turn based (tedious) nor hack and slask (boring). But then again, I dont like too much dialogues either (eg. torment). While I like rpg, fps, and adventure games, I cant stand games like SIM or RTS type of games. And I also dislike sports games.

INFP According to this, I'm like Fred Rogers, Neil Diamond and Dick Clark. While I admit I've always thought I'd be a good replacement host for American Bandstand, or hell, Mr. Rogers lovely day in the Neighborhood show, the results of this test were a little tough to handle. At least Richard Simmons wasn't on the list. Sheesh.

Let me see: I worked in six out of the professions given, and my current job combines three of them. But I absolutely hated my spell in social work/clergy because I hate working with people face-to-face, and I guess I'd hate working as a nurse for pretty much the same reason.

That's a lot of concurrence, Jaz. I found the thing hit and miss for me, but the hits were spot on--and our list of peoples includes Dr, John H. Watson, which can only be good, though that's somewhat countered by that limp little creature Melanie in Gone with the Wind--better than George Bush, though! :p
