Diablo 3 - Confirmed in Paris

That's not unbreakable, not even close. Although they will be making a whole new version of battle.net that'll go live when Starcraft 2 ships and Diablo 3 will use this also.

Can you play without valid cd key in battle.net? Diablo is client-server based:

Diablo II was released in 2000 to much fan-fare. The main highlight of Diablo II as it relates to Battle.net was that the game was completely client-server based.

Client-server based code is one of the best DRMs.

See, that was the big change from Diablo to Diablo II, for me. I loved the original and thought it was a complete single-player action/RPG with an beautifully atmospheric setting.

It was Diablo II that morphed into an online game with a tacked-on solo aspect.

I'm pleased it seems a genuine continuation of Diablo rather than MMORPG.

Most definitely.

Diablo was a great (if short) single player experience. D2 didn't have any of the atmosphere in the single-player game that made Diablo enjoyable. It felt like you were just playing a MMORPG in off-line mode.

Som say the keygens still work but only in singleplayer:

Keygens will still work if you want to play single player by yourself, but that is mad boring.
You need a legit classic and expansion CD key to be able to play multiplayer online.

Often accounts are lost to viruses too (keyloggers/filesearchers) - it happens so much in wow that they made a security dongle for the game.

EDIT: I found some more (from finnish site though)
Diablo 2:sen suosio taas näkynee myös myynti tilastoissa koska sen pelaaminen netissä on tehty mahdottomaksi (ainakin hyvin hankalaksi) ilman alkuperäistä key-koodia, siis battle.net:ssä.

It says that diablo2 populary shows also in sales numbers because playing in battle.net has been made impossible (or atleast very hard) without original key.

But even if you do manage to get a valid key (perhaps small % of the gen keys are valid), piracy in diablo2 is truly stealing - you are stealing somone elses key. Also its very personal since you have to share the account with person you stole it from. Might not be fun for either party especially when they both can delete each others characters.

Som players tried to even make their own copy of battle.net but failed:
A group of gamers reverse engineered the network protocol used by Battle.net and Blizzard games, and released a free (under the GNU GPL) Battle.net emulation package called bnetd. With bnetd, a gamer is not required to use the official Battle.net servers to play Blizzard games.

In February of 2002, lawyers retained by Blizzard threatened legal action under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act against the developers of bnetd. Blizzard games are designed to operate online exclusively with a set of Blizzard-controlled servers collectively known as "Battle.net". Battle.net servers include a CD key check as a means of preventing software piracy.

Despite offers from the bnetd developers to integrate Blizzard's CD key checking system into bnetd, Blizzard claims that the public availability of any such software package facilitates piracy, and moved to have the bnetd project shut down under provisions of the DMCA.[7] As this case is one of the first major test cases for the DMCA, the Electronic Frontier Foundation became involved, for a while negotiations were ongoing to resolve the case without a trial. The negotiations failed however, and Blizzard won the case on all counts: the defendants were ruled to have breached both StarCraft's End User License Agreement (EULA) and the Terms of Use of Battle.net.[8] This decision was appealed to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, which also ruled in favor of Blizzard/Vivendi on September 1, 2005.[9]

Well I solved my problem back then by simply login and leave the game running so the other person couldn't use my key and obviously gave up. Maybe I should re-install and see if big bob still uses my key.

Of course. Diablo is the father of hack&slash action rpgs. Every other one is pretty much a clone of Diablo.

I guess that the "Guest"'s reply was meant to be ironically. Which you seemingly didn't catch.

Wow. Couldn't disagree more. With the possible exception of Diablo 1's Tristram compared to the towns in Diablo 2, I thought 2 greatly improved on top of the original atmosphere. Admittedly, it wasn't all perfect and there were missteps, such as dragging out Act II and Act III too long as to spoil the atmosphere with too much repetition. But I'd be interested to hear how Diablo 2 could possibly have been a step backwards in atmosphere. That just does not compute with me at all.

Looks like a Titan Quest clone to me.
I'd have to agree, from a graphics style perspective. Seems they went after the same, soft, rounded edges, light colors look. When I first saw the screenshot of the goatmen, I thought, "looks like they copy and pasted from Titan Quest's assets".

Maybe because it was. D2 just didn't bring anything new to the table in terms of atmosphere, especially for a game that was released 3 years later than it's predecessor.

The single biggest complaint for most people, myself included, was the ridiculous manner in which all monsters (even bosses!) respawned everytime you loaded a saved game. That was a huge immersion breaker for a lot of people, and was a terrible decision on the part of Blizzard to do that.

Who are these people? I've never heard that before. You're saying you didn't enjoy doing mephyrunzs for the 1000 time? :)

I didn't play it for the immersion, I played it to make the uber character. If you want immersion play Bloodlines, if you want a fun action game with tons of loot and skills, then Diablo is your game.

I really liked Diablo 2. Heck, I completed it at least once with every character. However, I only play single player and I also found it "strange" to put it mildly that the only way to save was to quit the game and once you did, everything had respawned when you started it again.

I solved the problem by playing each act in one go, leaving the computer turned on overnight. Once I had completed it with a couple of characters I stopped worrying about it and just played from teleport-stone to teleport-stone.

It was obvious that Diablo2 was designed to proved the same game to both singleplayer crowd as well as the multiplayer crowd and, in my opinion, the advantages of the improvements upon the original Diablo far outweighed the disadvantages of reduced saving abilities and respawning.

So even though I really REALLY liked Diablo 2, I'm one of those people you've never heard of skavenhorde

Me, for example.

It's just ... unlogical.

Yes, that's what I'd call "Powergaminung", or "Munchkin", to use the pother term.

The sad thing is that millions of people have "learned" by now that "role-playing" is nothing but that.

So much for the future of the RPG genre ...

Diablo has never claimed to be anything other than an action RPG. You take on the role of a hero in a class of your choice and save the world by doing quests and vanquishing monsters.

The fact that you have class and ability choices doesn't take anything away from it being an action RPG in my book. If you want non-action RPGs you can always go and play Dungeon Lords 2 :p
