I love Post Apocalyptic RPGs because there is death and destruction everywhere. If it isn't caused by you out is left over from yester year. Best of all you get to see the future today!

I love post apocalyptic games/worlds because I know those that really annoy me won't be smart enough to survive and will no longer be around. So as I roleplay my character in game, I think to myself that this is a world devoid of those that should not be. This not only works for people I know, but also people I haven't met yet. Think of it as a culling.

I have loved these types of games since I first played fallout 1...there was nothing like that at the time.

Plus, I know I would be totally bad ass at post apocalyptic sun tanning…

The Post-Apoc genre is great because it's really about post-Civilization, often with underlying themes of what humanity would really be like if the gloves came off.

In a sandbox sense this often provides a truly hand's off approach to choice & consequence. The only thing dictating your decisions should be your conscience, or lack thereof.

Not to mention the cool settings.

I suppose the greatest reason I love Post-Apoc RPGs is that the kind of stories told in them differ a bit from the usual, and despite the popularity of Fallout it's a genre that still has plenty to tell.

I like the sense of exploration, and the little blooms of hope you see, when you come across a small village of people just trying their best to survive. Trying to make the world a better place....

.... and of course, destroying all of the megalomaniacs, that seek to control and subjugate everyone and everything around them. :cm:

Fallout 2 is one of my all time favorite games. I like the "it's you vs. the world and the world is f***ed". It's also great for exploration, which is something I treasure in games.

Because there's nothing like a nuked wasteland to pave my road to glory and my own — benevolent, obviously — dictatorship… I shall enlighten the shepherdless survivors and make them bow for their one, true deity: ME.

I love post apocalyptic RPGs because it all boils down to survival of the fittest and how humankind will react to an almost complete wipe of everything it knows and takes for granted.

One thing I like about this genre is that it breaks the status quo. You no longer rely on the old way of life. Forget what you knew, it's all different now and there's an all new set of rules you have to follow if you want to keep alive. Every day is a fight against nature (or what is left of it), other savage humans, radiation, mutants etc.
Interestingly, when the nuclear apocalypse blows everything to hell, humankind is at an apogee of technology. In the aftermath, those same humans are thrown back in time to a brutal, animalistic state, in which in order to satisfy even the most basic needs, a great amount of effort is required. The search for technology becomes as important as relieving those basic necessities.

What compels me to post apocalyptic stories is the observation of how will humankind react when it's reborn, anew.

I remember getting the Boot Hill, Basic D&D and Gamma World books all around the same time long ago. Gamma World by far captured my attention the most. I've always enjoyed the setting where civilization as we know it is destroyed and people going thru the struggle for survival and meaning. What new mutated animals and plants will be encountered? How will man react to another group of people? Will I even be mutated? It captures my imagination for sure. I may need to enter the inhospitable cave known as "the attic" and dig out my Gamma World book. Rifts was cool too but that came out much later.

I love post-apocalyptic RPGs because I feel they are educational and prepare me for the day when our fragile society collapses.

Here's a few important lessons I've learned from Fallout, Wasteland, Dead State, Icy etc.:

1. Even though most people will be left without power, and we must spend our days scrounging for food, and fighting bandits, mutants / zombies, etc, the porn industry will survive the apocalypse and "porn star" will become one of the easiest jobs to get.

2. Money is completely worthless. You may as well burn that stuff to stay warm or use it as toilet paper. Start saving your bottle caps.

3. If you can't beat the flesh-eating zombies, might as well join them... People are looking for any excuse to resort to cannibalism. We're only about one extended power outage away from eating each other. While you may find it revolting, your neighbor is probably already wondering whether you'll go better with teriyaki or BBQ sauce.

After seen Mad Max back in the 80's I was addicted to the post apocalyptic theme. Since games are my primary spare time filler since the late 80's I was extremely pleased to play Fallout 1. I love Post Apocalyptic RPGs ever since. After Reset fulfills the criteria in theory to be a great Post Apocalyptic RPG and would love to play it. (after i finish wasteland 2 of course).

Because our species is galloping towards a dystopian hellscape future with a big silly grin on its face, so - hey - we might as well have fun with it!
