The Deutscher Computerspielepreis is a new award created by the industry, backed by the German government and parlament, and supported by the Bavarian government. The country was represented by the secretary of culture, Bernd Neumann, the Free State of Bavaria by governor Horst Seehofer.
Everybody who knows how critical games are seen in Germany can estimate the political and social importance such an award has.
Drakensang: The Dark Eye won the main award, Best German Game. The award comes with a €150,000 purse.

Congratulations to publisher dtp and developer Radon Labs!

Sometimes you have the feeling "tolerated" would be the correct expression...

Anyway, great news for Radon Labs.

No, in that case Mr Seehofer wouldn't have presented an award.

Did he?

A well deserved award. (Not that there are many German computer games, lol. But still...)

That's great news for Drakensang! I wish it were more popular over here in North America.

150.000 Euro for winning a local award? That's actually a lot better than I would've expected (usually it's just some symbolic award). Big grats to the developer team.

Drakensang won another award too. It was hidden somewhere in the PR. They also got "Best Game for the Young". Children got their own category, the winner is Fritz & Chesster. The awards are worth 75k each.

Unfortunately it will not happen.

Maybe THQ throws out enough copies for 5-10 bucks each to broaden the market for The River of Time.

The amount of money shows how important the industry and the ministry of culture considers it to get the discussion about games on a stable niveau. Both provided half the budget of 600k.

Of course it's an unwritten law that the prize money has to be reinvested.

Another important point is that Drakensang received aid money from a public media fund (MDM - Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung). Quite a lot, 500k. Most such funds are specialized in film and television. Their job is to both secure cultural variety (read: fund intellectual projects nobody watches ;) ) and help mainstream projects "decide" that they want to shoot a significant part of the project in Germany. (Example: The next Tarantino movie.)
The funds don't have so much gaming know how yet, and they're subject to political influence from many sides. They still have to learn that well chosen games can be a worthy investment and secure jobs in their region. In this regard it's a very positive signal that a comparatively expensive project was so successful while staying out of the game violence discussion.

Interesting. The PR sent out yesterday said:

"In der Kategorie "Bestes Internationales Spiel" gab es gleich zwei Gewinner: Der Bayerische Ministerpräsident Horst Seehofer überreichte die Preise an die Sieger Nintendo für "Wii Fit" und Sony Computer Entertainment für "LittleBIGPlanet"."

Seems the PR guy wasn't there. Gamestar also wrote that Seehofer did not appear:

Shame on you Mr. President! Uhm... governor!
