Silverfall - English Demo on Monday

I am confused ... so I'll try to summarize what I think I hear:
- Game sites require free registration in order to access 'level 1' info and downloads. 'Level 0' can be had without registration, but no downloads. Special treatment, access, server priority and so on can be obtained for $X per year.

Now I understand Acel's comments, but I don't feel it's that big of deal as he is making. My problem was that it is frustrating to go through a VERY complicated (in this instance) process of registration just to download something from a site ONE time. It brought to the fore my aggrevation of late with every company, every site wanting personal information from you such as home address... etc...

You can't buy so much as a flash drive anymore without the maker of the product practically wanting everything but your social security number. I don't like that.

I have to say that Ive just definitely read, if anything, the most wildly creative theory as to why gaming sites want your email address. Kudos there, bro Ace.

Looks like i'll have to give this demo a looksee tonight, seems all the kids are doing it these days. I however, am a premium subscriber. I feel strange now tho, like I ought to be looking over my shoulder or something. I had no idea that I was purrhaps a cog in this huge game website conspiracy, which in itself is just another cog in the grander conspiracy to, I guess... take over the world?

How could I have been so blind?

Apologies it took me a day to get to this as I knew it would take me an hour or so with my lack of 1337 typing and grammar skills. :)

"- There is some evil person at the head of these sites (Rscaife?)"
Yeah sort of but, I did make a mistake it was Rupert Murdock at the helm of the media organizations (websites) we were talking about, oh and he's the Australian whom owns 80% of most of the English language Broadcast TV and News print across the US and world, iirc.. ;)

Part of the reason I confused both these guys is they are very corrupt and paid huge amounts to get vital government civil protections with deregulation, one of which is related to undermining the Media.
I had been trying to go by memory and had a conversation recently about (Rscaife), so to all Australian's I offended by suggesting (Rscaife) was Australian you have my apologies. :)

[My definition of evil (in case you want a baseline) is undermining humanity (human, civil and equal rights) without any regard for the consequences of their actions for power and profit, so obviously others might define it differently.]

The other things I said about Rscaife were accurate like the interview and I guess the evil part was more in the line of, the interview I sited and the financing this evil organizations.
Columbia School of Journalism is one of the most nonpartisan highly regarded journalism associations and schools possibly in the world, also associated with the Pew Charitable Trust, iirc.

After he made his first threat (?) to get out, he went on verbally attacking her saying she had bad teeth and verbally attacking her mother.
As she did comply by starting to leave he said,” Don’t look behind you." (another threat?).
Basically in 1981 when this happened info had started coming out about Iran Contra and the RNC undermining the 1980 elections by selling weapons to terrorists.
So through his financing to help get regan elected, his favor was getting
The Fairness Doctrine removed, which require news broadcast to provide accurate news.

This allows Rupert Murdock to run propaganda organizations like fox and new york (puke?) post and many others like the american spectator and media research center because they are not required to tell the truth.
They now use innuendo and opinion and call it news, which most of the US public doesn't seem to know.
In case you’re interested in the implications of this, control of the media for political propaganda is 1 of the 14 common denominators in one of the most extensive studies of all known fascist societies to have existed, by Dr. Lawrence Britt.
Oh and here in the US we currenlty have the other 13 denominators, isn't that hoot!

Crap in a way this brings us back to Rscaife (see why it's easy to confuse them) whose funding started these organizations though he was mostly a player during the 1980's and Rupert Murdock started in the mid to early 1990s and helping newt and others lie their way into control of the house and senate, not doing a single one of the ten promise to America pledges getting away terrible deregulation consequences for 10 years.

"- That identity theft is somehow uniquely associated with these sites?"
No, in my explanation of how identity thief happens more easily the more you give out your personal info like credit cards, the more likely the data is to get illegally purchased, might have seemed to suggest this but wasn't my intent that these sites are more dangerous.
They could be, though I couldn't tell you much about it, apologies.

"I guess I'm not sure where the line between being unable to register a user name, wanting not to wait 24 hours for a download, and being oppressed by evil overlords is drawn?"
Hehe , that actually sounds like a potential game. :)
As I mentioned Jabberwocky seemed annoyed at dealing with these sites, as if he had experienced it before, so I though I would explain why the sites do this, to the best of my knowledge, yet if you know differently then I would gladly hear why this occurs.
Not wanting to wait 24 hours only came in a little later when I brought it up as the most annoying to me personally, iirc.
So while this adds to the potential game design not sure it really relates to the topic other than a personal peeve.

"being oppressed by evil overlords is drawn?"
I really like this makes me want to change my nick. :)
I think/hope this was explained this above.

Lol, it wouldn't be very nice of me to accept credit since not what meant or did intend it as so. ;)

Yeah yeah, We know, we know... Basically, anything that isnt totally left-wing/ democrat/ liberal/ socialist to the core is evil, neo fascist, and out to rule and/or destroy the world. Got ya, Ace. For like the tenth time.

Now back to what people actually read a thread like this for, Silverfall. So far, I really am liking it, glad I checked it out. It has a weird, unique look to it that in ways reminds me of one of my favorite games of all time, Myth II. I really like the graphics. Gameplay, well, it's a hack and slash is all I can really say so far. That's not entirely bad, I like a good slashfest as much as the next tiger.
I need another hour or so with it to really get a good evaluation, buit it's 2:30 AM on a work night!

Well if this philosphy/perception helps you get through I am happy for you, but I did notice you never provide any real world verifiable examples and some would there by claim they are baseless, best of luck with that. :)

Hey I apploigised for thinking Austrialia had spawned a second evil guy. ;)

Well the biggest part of the confusion for me in Silverfall is what I think txa1265 and Jabberwocky mentioned there was technology and nature choices, since I played the attempted English translation of the French demo I didn't understand this, so it's one or the other?

Neither did you, quite frankly - which is why Sammy was correct in being dismissive. Your post sounds *exactly* like what you decry - alarmist rhetoric short on detail and long on innuendo. 'Unbiased news' is a myth, because the politics of both sides (and not just in the US, if you listen to international news reports as well) - but it appears that you are clearly in the 'left wing = good, right wing = evil' camp. Oh that life were so simple ...

From my point of view this is nothing personal, I like you txa1265 and xSamhainx I know we can have an adult conversation about this and I will do my best. :)

txa1265
"Neither did you, quite frankly"
I disagree completely I am going out of my way to provide specific examples, though I am glad you agree with about Sammy.

"alarmist rhetoric short on detail and long on innuendo."
Give me an example.

"'Unbiased news' is a myth"
That's not an example that’s a rationalization, since you didn't say “name an unbiased news source“ (which I already did) or “name another one”.
Are you saying the Columbia School of Journalism is biased and not one of the most respected organizations?
I will be shocked if this is so, since you are a journalist.

" but it appears that you are clearly in the 'left wing = good, right wing = evil' camp. Oh that life were so simple ."
Once again this is baseless without some sort of verifiable "at least possibility” of what your saying could be true.
Not only are you intentionally skipping past the facts, but you’re making whole cloth assumptions based on your bias. :)

Personally I think what your saying/implying is nonsense, I have lots of respect for the opinions of Conservatives.
Let me pose another question, which of course you’re free to ignore also. ;)
If the most extensive study of fascist countries to date, listing all the common denominators implicated corrupt democrats, would it matter to you?

"Oh that life were so simple "
Facts and accuracies are simple, I am perfectly willing to learn and certainly willing to address any of you points based on merit, but you haven't said anything but generalizations.

What is not accurate about what I said specifically?
I have already stated I was incorrect not only that I was the one whom caught my own error, so you dancing around doing the jig :p saying it's not so simple, what isn't simple?

Besides the fact it's not like most of this is my opinion, your the one whom states there are no nonbiased news sources but yet the international community disagrees with you, since there is an actual "Accuracy of News" international study that ranks the news accuracy in each country every year.
Maybe you missed this?

So the point is I can name the most accurate news in the world and it won't be my opinion and if you jump on here saying "OMG teh Can't be True it's Bias" without a single "even close to accurate" statement, backing that assumption up, then you are the one you should be looking at. ;)

"My connection has been exceedingly hectic lately and I'm finding I can't download the demo. Too bad. Maybe some other time"
I posted a link in the other Silverfall demo thread which is free with regestration allowing capped at 500k download,
Good download site fast and timely posting of files. :)

Actually, it is. Can you prove otherwise? :)

When liberals go bad, it's usually results in misguided decisions with unintended consequences.

When conservatives go bad, it's usually just plain evil that is counter to everything good about humanity.

And please, let's not anyone fall back on "liberals are bad because they approve of things my religion says are naughty". That, obviously, is completely subjective and irrelevant.

I think my last post was misunderstood.

You got me wrong Acl, it's not the ideological angle of what youre saying. I'm not defending anyone or anything in this thread. I would feel the same if someone launched into a rant about how it's the Left Wing Boogeyman behind the curtain, every perceived chance they get, no matter what the conversation. It's eye-rolling comical to me (if a bit exhausting), and I just had to make a crack about it.

Like I said - Yeah we know already, "it's the 'Evil Right Wing Boogeyman', stupid!". Just put it in your freakin signature already and get it over with, man!

Anyway, apart from the interesting discussion about gaming sites and their
identity requirements, I downloaded the English demo of Silverfall from Gamespot.

There seems to be some troubles with this demo/game that I overlooked at first:

I still by my initial post concerning this game: It is a very fun game, it takes a fresh & innovative approach in the story arc and in the gameplay --- not so much, but it doesn't a better job than say Diablo, I think. I still do also stand on my point that visuals & graphics aren't everything. and that in this game, the story elements
quickly let you forgot the presentation. (I'm saying this since for some the game's visuals and graphics might be a turn off; it wasn't for me, however).

Now for the more critical or concernable aspects of the game:

I'm having a hard time moving around, but it's getting better (I think).
I have a hard time finding people. Yes, there are blue dots on the map,
but this really means, at least for me, running around in circles in the camp,
every time, I have to find say the blacksmith. Not FUN! (at least to me).
On the other hand, it does get me all over the campsite....

The interface is pretty good, except for one thing, which irritates......me a great deal. You can't pick a quest in say 'your secondary quest' and then go straight to the map to see where it is. You have to close your map, (for the present quest), then open the secondary quest log, then choose another quest in there, then
open up your map again. Not FUN!

Character developmemt in terms of abilities, and skills are still great, while it takes some time to be used to the game's interface (or UI, for short). The side quests are a lot deeper than any sidequests in Diablo ever was, and the main quest well, is a good and well-written than any other rpg out there.

I'll still gladly recommend this game... :)

I will be shocked if this is so, since you are a journalist.

But I am *not* a journalist ... I am a scientist and statistician who is also a writer about video games.

As a scientist, my maxim goes like the old saying 'in god we trust, all others bring data' :) So when I say examples, I mean links to published reports.

As for the rest, I don't see the point in arguing - you appear (as does chamr) to believe that conservative = evil and liberal = good, and when liberals do bad things it is because they were trying too hard to be good and made misguided choices that led to unintended consequences, whereas since conservatives are just evil to the core any bad is just a failure to mask their evil.

I think that is a prima facia gross generalization, that there are plenty of liberals who exist just to exploit social injustice as a means of furthering their own causes and don't care about those who they are exploiting, just as I believe that many conservatives are truly concerned about the human condition and think that working hard for things benefits people more than a guaranteed paycheck from the government. In other words, I believe that good and evil are human traits, not political ones, that good people can believe very different things about the best course of action for a society.

Chamr, you seem to assume a political identity for me because I don't immediately label conservatives as evil. In fact you go further and link me to moralistic groups that try to force their ways of living on others. That whole train of thought was extremely narrow-minded, and I don't see what led you there. I am somewhat fiscally conservative, but very much socially liberal (pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, etc) ... I am a Christian, but a more or less a libertarian - I don't like the government enforcing *any* private behaviour on adults. I can't *stand* the evangelical types going around judging everyone ...

I made a long post the other day of this demo and how much I liked it. it must have timed out in the reply.

The time out on this site is worse than Bioware's. I'm going to put in request for it to be lengthened, that way Acl can really get out what he means to say.

Lucky, if I was there I'd rap your knuckles with a ruler. Always remember the first rule of Forum Posting 101 - always "select all" your text and "copy" before you post. Then confirm that your post was actually posted.

ctrl+a & ctrl+c 4 life!

I havent played the demo any more, going to hit it now. Played PnP today and it gave me an awesome headache for some reason. Must have slept for 6 hours, wiped me out!

Not really. I was just challenging your assertion that "conservative = bad and liberal = good" is an oversimplification. Didn't assume you were one or the other. On top of that, I was doing a bit of pot-stirring and soap-boxing. :)

But just to be clear, I don't believe all conservatives are bad. Many are fine people with good intentions. My point is that a major difference between the two ideologies is that liberals come from a much more "good" place than conservatives, in my opinion. It's directly reflected in the policies and style of governance they bring to bear when in power. For me, when liberals get it wrong, it's frustrating. But when conservatives get it wrong, it's scary, cruel, and repugnant.
