Thanks Maylander. I went into services.msc and shut down a few odds/sodds including windows media player network sharing. Played around with msconfig startup items and knocked back a few extra items.
Result: smoother framerate, no crash to desktop during a 3 hr. play session. I was able to put Textures on High, Detail on Medium and the other 2 on low with playable framerates.
The only problem I still have is when I place the retail dvd into drive, it will crash resulting in BSOD. It will sometimes crash when I eject the dvd as well. I've tried this with either my dvd reader or external dvd burner, same result. Like someone suggested, I'll try to hunt down a no-dvd patch and see if that helps. Otherwise, I'll just leave the dvd in the drive until i'm finished playing.
