I just looked in on the Codex, and there seems to be a grade-A shitstorm going on there. Anyone care to fill in the clueless?

I may not know all the details, but from what I know...It happened one week ago.

VD ( Vault Dweller) wanted to introduce RPGCodex to more strict moderation. He banned few posters( which I think was right) and after this many posters created topics about "nazi moderations", "VD must go" and so on. One week ago, I think it was Friday morning some codexian hacked the site and take it over. Site Admins (Calis and I think Dark Underlord) shut the page down and restored it after awhile without banning privileges for VD. VD said he wont stay as a admin, editor and etc. if he doesnt get his privileges again. After a while he was disscussing a compromise with Calis in a open manner(thread), but Dark Underlord got into it and the disscussion enden. Long story short VD isnt involved in site managing anymore, Dark Underlord introduced to his "vision" of the Codex and posters created dozen of threads complaining about DU and they want VD back. According to me DU was just fed up with VD and wanted a oppurtunity to get rid off him ( he behaved very unproperly thowards VD to say at the least).

Of course thats just my view of the events.

Thanks for the clarification. Good clean web forum fun, in other words.

Shame about VD. He has his faults, but all things considered he's one of the net.denizens I respect the most.

I always liked Vault Dweller's razor sharp news comments and his interesting interviews and reviews.

I would say daily Codex e-Drama ;) .

But seriously it is a great loss to RPGCodex to lose VD. Hope he wont abondone it altogether.

I didn't even know they did IP bans. You might have got caught up in some spambot IP ban or something, that kind of stuff happens.

Yeah, it's a mess on the 'dex. Ah well, now VD can focus on AoD and hopefully a new generation of RPG miserly old men will rise on the site.

So VD was kicked out for trying to implement some actual form of reason and control and reduce the staggering degree of embarrassment that the Codex has become?

Actually, Gallifrey, going by my limited experience of the Codex, that would make perfect sense. :)

You know what, sometimes i did found the amount of flaming-fest and militant opinion on rpg at Codex rather fun and hilarious to read...

Yeap. Thats one of the reasons why I hang around there. But when Spacemouse(the one from which it all started) was warned for writing "8? weak" as for shooting incident in finnish school I could only agree with VD( to be specific Spacemoose was banned afterwards by VD because he posted some porn pictures in response of the warning). Afterwards threads named "Nazi VD" started to poop all over the forum. Whats hilarious is that many of those people complaining about VD then, now are eager to welcome him back and embrace his moderation once again . They just cant make up their mind, can they? :)

But what was suprising for me is that the Dark Underlord, Calis didnt defend VD before forum members as a team should, but they just kicked him out and in case of DU even throwed a lot of mud in VD direction. If they didnt agree with VD, they should have publicly supported VD, but in their staff forum tried to straightened things up. I dont think I have to mention that both Calis and Dark Underlord lost a lot in my eyes and I think not only in my.

Well good for Vault Dweller for trying to clean up the place somewhat. The Codex of today is not the Codex of the past. It's always been angry and bitter and caustic, but there was usually an intelligence to it and ultimately a real point. Now the Codex is just a bunch of immature kids reveling in being able to be rude and combatative and has little to do with RPGs.
VD is a bright guy and I suspect wanted the Codex to have some merit, which it does not have much of right now.

Who doesn't?

Thanks for the kind words, folks. As what the recent events, well, "But I tried, didn't I? Goddamn it. At least I did that."

So my nefarious plan to destroy the codex from the inside finally succeeded? The Codex ate itself? And I missed it!

Meh, I doubt Codex without VD is much fun. But you never know who rises to the challenge.

On the other hand, as a new site, the codex has been rather dead the last few months. This shake up brought in a new round of news posters, who've been very busy over the past week. Hopefully this will bring in a new round of grumpy RPG fans to discuss game design again (but without the tubse goatgirl links, please).

The Codex, to me, tipifies a lot of what's captivating about Web forums. It's hard to know where to find the gold nuggets, and even if you look in the right spot, you still have to sift through a lot to reach them.

People post stuff to sift through hourly at The Codex, and that's actually pretty cool. It's a place that's committed to preserving what we all love about RPG, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that, either. Most of the comments, you know, aren't worth much; and I'd like to say I can't relate to them, that I'm only there looking for gold. But the truth is I can often relate whether I like it or not.

There'll be less gold to find without VD there. It's The Codex's loss, and a loss for everyone who browses their forums.
