The TV Series discussion thread

...The big scene stealer is Tony Rossi as the brother in law Tobias, who was not intended to be a major character...

Actually David Cross plays Dr Tobias Fünke. Arrested Development has always been one of my favourite TV series and the new season was great. I'm waiting for the followup movie which might be out next year.

I'm really hating the crazy timing on stuff now, though. Shows taking 3 months off around XMas, shows starting in early August, shows not starting until late October… I miss the bad old days when everything came out at the beginning of September, ran until the week before Christmas, and then the midseason replacements rolled out in January and ran thru May. Now it's nearly impossible to keep track of what's happening when.

I had those problems but solved it by turning my old PC into a sort of IPTV "decoder". It's complicated to set it up properly and to explain would be even more complicated as you have to pinpoint on which ports streams are being delivered.
By doing this, I can record anything I want and space is not the issue as in the PC is 500GB HDD. That PC is connected to my TV and I'm not using it for anything else any more. The only software you need to buy for this is ProgDVB (http://www.progdvb.com/ and IMO is really cheap) and then you need to waste hours, even days to find correct IP addresses and ports.

But my IPTV provider added a cheap "recorder" service that can store you 30 hours of anything and is easy to use so I'm using that thing. In case it turns out to be something I want to keep and rerun in a year, two, more, or show to my friends/family, I rerecord it on PC too. Dunno if I'm doing something illegal by this. I'm not selling or sharing that stuff on cloud storages (Megaupload, Rapidshare, etc) so maybe it's not illegal.

Oops, yeah I knew that. Somehow I mixed up Portia de Rossi's name with his. My friend is recommending his HBO specials Mr. Show but warned me about the language.

Mr Show was only mildly interesting to me but your mileage may vary of course. David Cross is just incredible in Arrested Development.

Stumbled on not a surprise really, but unexpected somewhat since first miniserie(s) have the perfect ending.
Utopia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2384811/?mode=desktop ) will get season 2:
http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/03/utopia-renewed-for-2nd-season.html
While I can't wait to see more bizzarity and clever twists, if you can't watch it anywhere, season 1 is available on DVD worldwide and is worth every penny - use the cash you refused to give for "season pass" frauds.

Now if only BBC got some guts and renewed The Fades (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1772379/ )…

EDIT:
More news…
Our "beloved" J.J.Abrams is preparing two everyone's "wetdream" sci-fi projects: Believe and Almost Human. I just can't be arsed to post you links, pics and crap descriptions.

Cult series Blake's 7 is getting a remake:
http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2013/04/special-features-blakes-7-remake-and.html
I've almost puked when I've read the article title, but then again, BSG was an awsome remake, maybe this could turn out good. So instead of puking, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Not really a TV topic but, since it STARTED on tv, I guess this thread is the place. The Veronica Mars movie wrapped up today after a 23 days shoot, now it heads into the editing stages, which will take several months to complete.

I loved Blake's 7 when it aired in my country. Haven't revisited after that, so I don't know if it survives those decades. I really hope they don't screw this one up.

it looked about as interesting as Babylon 5, so I passed.

That's funny, I just started watching Babylon 5 during my commute. It's amazing how much TV you can go through in 8 years of stilling on a train for an hour and a half a day!

I do a similar thing, but much easier. Have an HTPC in my living room with a CableCard adapter (InfiniTV4) running Windows Media Center (Win 7). Only have a 120GB SSD in there, but it connects to my home server (ESXi 5.1 with WHS2011 Virtual Machine) that has 14TB of space (about 10TB of that is ripped DVD's, HD-DVD's and BluRays). Every night the recorded TV moves from the HTPC to the server. For the other TV's in the house, we use XBox 360s as media center extenders to watch anything that's been recorded or live TV.

As a DVR, its flawless, and for serial shows, we typically just record the entire season, then watch it all over two or three weeks. It's really a shame that MSFT didn't do more to promote their Media Center platform, because its easily the most verstile and best DVR software I've ever used, and this comes from a (former) long time user of Tivo.

I'll have to check out BSG sometime. I just never feel like watching TV for long sits.

It's rare that I watch TV for more than an hour a night. Just don't have the time, and really the only reason I do it then is to have a little bit of time with the wife where I don't have to be actively engaged in conversation!

If (when) I leave NYC and commute in a car like the rest of the country, the amount of TV I consume is going to plummet.

Yeah, my wife has figured that out with her Kindle Fire HD. On the one hand, its great when I'm trying to do something on the computer and she doesn't bother me. On the other, if she finds something she likes, its blaring while I'm trying to get to sleep! Apparently headphones in bed are weird! :)

What you get when Stephen King plays Gothic 1/2/3 and then talks with CBS?

This june, you (we) get this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDS28r2qnAw&feature=player_embedded

Is anyone watching this or just me got crazy and actually went on it?
Seriously, I'm unsure why am I watching it. I knew since it's King there has to be his cliches all over it (crazy priest for example), but every new episode the show goes more and more stupid. I mean… Ppl are trapped inside a sphere of energy. What would you do first? Check it's center, right? Wrong! They needed 7 episodes to finally go there!

What's more odd, it got 7+ on imdb:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1553656/

I cann't believe ppl voted that high for that bullshit.

Final season of Breaking Bad starts tomorrow night.

Nuff said…

We are late on that one, and my wife and older son are much further than me due to too much work travel ... so we'll probably watch this season by 2015 ;)

I'm pissed off.

Just saw a trailer on Fox Crime for series The Bridge.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2406376/

Yes, Fox Crime will be airing a silly remake of this masterpiece:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1733785/

Okay, I understand the need to shoot somethig like that so ppl who can't read (subtitles) can watch the story. But original series have the best portrait of a highly functional person with Asperger syndrome thus I'm talking about a masterpiece. Yet from the trailer of the remake it seems, and I really hope I'm wrong, that the remake ditched that part of the story completely.

The remake on Fox Crime starts 15th of July. I can't but suggest not to watch it but to go if possible for the original show.
September 22th, on STV and DR1 starts the second season:

I can't watch those swedish and danish public channels, so I'll have to wait it appears on other networks, usually takes a week or two.

Oh, and I see all season 1 eps are uploaded on youtube with english subtitles. Nice.

Yes, I'm aware I could just make a post like JDR did:
Bron/Broen, second season, nuff said.

Can't. I'm saving it for Utopia. ;)
