Well that's good to know. I've been right-clicking on each piece I pick up that didn't get added to the food count automatically.

You don't have to actively feed the party, you just have to be carrying enough food for them. Since food is incredibly easy to come by it's never actually a hassle unless you go down into a dungeon carry very little.
