The "variants" thing is … Well, I found the (A)D&D varuants quite lame :
normal: Ghul
harder : Grul (reminds me of ("cruel")
(Note: This is the English "Ghoul" translated by someone into German-language editions of (A)D&D. Names taken from my memory, could thus be distorted.)
I thought : Didn't they have more creativety at hand ?

Besides, an imho still very good marketing thing is to let the fans decide the name of a monster …
