Default Neo Scavenger - Preview @ D22 Zone

January 22nd, 2014, 07:02
D22 Zone has posted a preview of the post-apocalyptic RPG Neo Scavenger.

There’s such depth here that the demo can only ever offer a glimpse into what the full game offers, and given that the full game is an Early Access title the demo gets further away from the final product every day. That said the game is extremely playable; only a few less than obvious UI issues stand in your way of yet another “Oh god I died again” title.
More information.

I just bought this one after reading yesterday's post here at The Watch. Man, this is a good one. As the excerpt above says, it's entirely playable. No glitchy Alpha build here. For $10, it's a steal, as far as I'm concerned. Sure, it's not much to look at, and the UI is unusual, though not bad once you get used to it. But, damn, it's fun. (Edit: as long as you don't mind permadeath, combat played out largely in text and micromanaging inventory, which I don't. )

I just made a bit of a wildman character: tough, strong, melee, medic and trapping skills. When he got hungry, he'd hunt a bandit and eat him. Unfortunately, he just died because he became exhausted chasing a bandit who didn't want to fight him. (I took the insomniac disadvantage for an extra skill and didn't notice how tired he was going into the fight.) The poor wildman got tuckered out running after the bandit (I really wanted his spear) and passed out. The bandit then turned around and killed him in his sleep. Good times!

I went ahead and spent the ten bucks too. You don't get to see any of the story/plot type stuff in the demo version. I'm pretty sure I've already gotten my $10 worth out of it too even as limited as it is.

There is a wiki but it's VERY spoilerish, and what with how little there actually is you might want to avoid most or all of it.

A few small but useful tips that weren't obvious to me (and got me killed because of it):

When camping/trying to sleep if there are other potential campsites over on the right side of the screen right click the one you want and choose Take/Drop and it will select it as your sleep site.

Then (if you have one) drop your sleeping bag on the ground in the site. If you're just carrying it it doesn't automatically use it. Just remember to pick it back up when you leave. (both of the above things will help you not die of exhaustion or hypothermia)

I died a few times from dehydration because I didn't know how to get water from ponds/creeks/etc. You need to open the crafting tab, then drag the water source over to the craft pane, and *craft* it to change it into water droplets that you can then Use to drink or take to fill up water bottles in your inventory.

The Botany skill lets you see whether those berries/mushrooms you find are poisonous or edible and gives you a boost for scavenging them.

The camping/sleeping/water things should all be streamlined in the interface to be more intuitive but I'm pretty sure he knows this and will be changing how things like that work.

All good to know, I didn't even know there WAS a crafting tab. The current UI is pretty awful, in fact it's one of the worst I've ever seen in a game. But the good news is that this is one of the easier things to fix in the long run, and the game definitely has tons of potential.

My only other quibble is that combat seems kind of dull, at least in the beginning. Even as a melee specialist with a knife against a random unarmed bandit I had to stab him over and over and over to see even the slightest effect. It looks like things are much deadlier with better weapons, but they could stand to tweak the initial battles.
