Default Runemaster - Preview @ Eurogamer

February 21st, 2014, 21:23
Eurogamer takes a look at Runemaster and comes to the conclusion Paradox is stepping out of its comfort zone. Here is a small part of the article.

Runemaster is an ambitious and unusual departure for Paradox Development Studio, but it doesn't look like the developer is showing any apprehension, nor any willingness to compromise on either scope or production values. Andersson is particularly excited to talk about working on something he's wanted to make since, he says, he was very young, and it will only be a year before he gets to share it with the world. Runemaster is slated for release in early 2015, when gamers will be able to decide whether they're happy with the worlds he's given them, or whether they want to tear them down to create something new.

A role-playing game of mythological world-hopping, featuring turn-based combat between dwarves and dark elves, sits side by side with more than a dozen real-time strategy titles set on humdrum planet earth. It doesn't so much look like the black sheep of the family as the black troll, too different to ever fit in. It would appear to be the cuckoo in the nest. But its paternity can't be questioned. Runemaster is the "dream project" of studio manager Johan Andersson who, although he has been instrumental in the development of Paradox's ever-growing grand strategy collection, has always had hopes he'd one day make an RPG.

Wow, so unusual a derivative strategy game becomes, if you only change genre to RPG!

You guys like Good Old Games, right? Check out the top three here, in the category of "Turn-based fantasy strategy games with rpg elements" (which is exactly what the developers of Runemaster are describing):

Well actually, it's more akin to the King's Bounty series, than Age of Wonders.

I haven't played King's Bounty, so I won't argue with you about that

You definitely should, but in short two main differences. Overland movement is real time instead of turn based (combat is still tactical turn-based) so this is how KB is more similar to Runemaster than Age of Wonders, and recruitable units are more or less randomly generated instead of fixed, which has the effect (some like me like it better this way, others don't) that you can't always have the army composition that you'd prefer. Not sure if Runemaster will be like AoW or KB in this aspect.

If it is like either AoW or KB it will be great. If it is more mainstream RPG then it still might be great. So far the previews are very positive but this isn't being released till 2015 so quite some time to pass before we know what is to become of it.
