So, will someone explain why everyone finds this game so captivating? The Bejeweled-clone game bored me after a couple of hours and ever since, I could only hadle a single fight a session/day. Needless to say, I didn't get very far.

It's Bejeweled with a purpose. Tying together half-a-million rounds of match-3 with a story, some stats, and some strategy pulls you along. I suppose you have to be at least mildly prone to match-3 madness in the first place, though.

[Rant] … And still the original Puzzle Quest not in German retail for the PC platform … Downloadable version only …
And that, although the shelves are full with different versions of the "Bejeweled" theme …[/Rant]

Much less cartoony look to the art; very nice screens. Also sounds like they've beefed up the non-matching support parts of the game as well. Looking forward to this one.
