Default Cyclopean - Character Generator Application

November 4th, 2008, 12:57
Here's a nifty idea - Iron Tower's Cyclopean lead Scott has released a Flash-based application that demos the anticipated character generation system for his early-in-development Lovecraftian CRPG. The application was designed for testing and balancing but releasing it is a fantastic idea for fans. Here's Scott's description:
I've created a Flash application that mimics the current iteration of stats, skills and traits for a character in Cyclopean. The user starts out at Level 1, chooses a Background or no Background, and may interactively review and purchase stats, skills and traits to evaluate how a character would progress and what he could achieve and when.
Read all about it in this thread at Iron Tower.
More information.

Why Flash-based ?

Personally, I would've preferred an offline version of it.

Making an app with VB or with Delphi can't be so difficult, I guess …

Well save it to your computer and then it will be offline, won't it?

The player is free so I don't see why it makes a difference.

Why not? Flash is a really fast way to quickly prototype user interfaces, it's platform-independent, and it's highly versatile. The fact that 99% of the stuff done with it is rubbish doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Flash itself.

(Checking out the character generator now…)

I made a few characters. The system really forces you to specialize. I could only max out 2 skills, and that was at the cost of ignoring pretty much everything else, including many traits in the skills I maxed. It's a pretty nifty system. Let's hope it has ways to utilize all of these skills (and gets made in the first place).
